Masters of a Fraction of a Dot

June 18 2010 003

“Look again at that dot.

That’s here.

That’s home.

That’s us.

21 Aug 2010 002

On it everyone you love,

everyone you know,

everyone you ever heard of,

every human being who ever was,

lived out their lives.

14 aug 2010 008The aggregate of our joy and suffering,

thousands of confident religions,

ideologies,

and economic doctrines,

every hunter and forager,

every hero and coward,

every creator and destroyer of civilization,

every king and peasant,

every young couple in love,

every mother and father,

hopeful child,

inventor and explorer,

every teacher of morals,

every corrupt politician,

every “superstar,”

every “supreme leader,”

every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Outside toilet at Bealtaine Cottage

That simple, yet profound realisation, became a fuel to energise all I do here at Bealtaine Cottage.

Bealtaine Cottage Valerian by the west gable wallPlanting and planting as if my life depends upon it…and it does.

Permaculture Bealtaine Cottage porchLiving close to the Earth, for she nurtures us all.

“Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner,

how frequent their misunderstandings,

how eager they are to kill one another,

how fervent their hatreds.

Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that,

in glory and triumph,

they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.”

~Carl Sagan

Where does one begin?

I can’t tell you.

How does one begin?

With kindness, compassion and a generosity towards future generations.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with Carl Sagan’s insightful observations, and admire your sincere endorsement of them in terms of your commitment to permaculture…..but my heart and soul, especially my soul, responds with joy at the sheer beauty of nature, as portrayed in your picture of the alo vera plant.

Indeed, Christine, Carl Sagan was unique, in that he combined a poet’s mind with science…a rare combination of right and left brain thinking.

  2. Well said – all you can do is make your own garden of eden – hopefully inspire someone else to do the same – to green up and love up and pretty up the world. Tending our own patch here and there. Creating a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the world. Your place is an inspiration.

I believe that more and more scientists are awakening to the realisation that Gaia is not mechanical, as science itself holds true, but a living entity governed by a connected consciousness.
This land has proved that to me.

  3. Ditto the above.
And I love the loo that has been transformed into a floral throne 🙂
Also those bees!!!!! in the top image, thank goodness their numbers do not seem to have declined as much in your little paradise as they have everywhere else.
I feel inspired to tend my little (tiny but I’m sure it still counts) patch of garden Beltaine cottage style this year.

Every flower, every shrub, every tree counts…plant something and the life gathers around it!
    Bless you
