In Violation!
Over the past few thousand years, humankind has regarded Nature as property.
This concept is rooted in biblical text and has spawned generations who have regarded themselves as having dominion over the Earth.
The feudal system was based on dominion and continues today as a land-grab mentality, based on the principles of ownership and extraction.
Where we are at this point in time is the evolution of that concept, that biblical teaching, where we are now forced to try to manage degradation of the environment rather than prevent it.
We blow the tops off mountains to extract minerals.
Hundreds of chemicals are injected into the Earth to extract gas.
The filth of Tar Sands is hailed as our energy saviour!
Seed is wrenched from us to be “owned” by corporations like Monsanto.
Presidents enact laws to protect these creatures of destruction from the very courts that are there to protect you! Nine days ago I started a petition.

Nine days ago I drew my line in the sand, deciding to refuse to comply with laws that violate Mother Earth and the abundance she so generously bestows upon us.
My own line in the sand has been confirmed this morning as the decision to refuse to comply with all laws that violate Mother Earth has been made.
The days of fence sitting are over. The gloves are off

April Snow, Bees and Butterflies
April weather is always unpredictable. Snow fell this morning…in between rain and brilliant sunshine! It was like a convergence of all the seasons in one morning! This time last year we were swimming in the Atlantic Ocean down by Mullaghmore Pier. Legs and arms, uncovered for the first time in months, looked a sickly white […]

The Drama Unfolds…
The rain has fallen for 48 hours. Heavy, relentless rain, that has washed down the hill behind the cottage and into the ditches, I constructed for such a deluge. The water is carried around the ditches and into the stream bed that flows down through the Fairy Wood and on, into the ponds. This is […]

Ivy, Euphorbia, Angelica and more Orchids at Bealtaine Permaculture Smallholding, Ireland.
The Ivy hangs in 3-4 metre tendrils on a tree in the Fairy Dell…Quite Magical!Euphorbia…this wonderful perennial comes up more lush every year and transplants easily…I started with a stolen cutting and now it dominates the April/May/June garden and beyond!Angelica, now at least 7 feet tall and with a massive spread. Medieval herbalists called it […]

Ecosystems, Stability, Wild Orchids and Cuckoos @ Bealtaine Permaculture Smallholding, Ireland
Working in the tunnel this morning I heard the first Cuckoo of the year calling from the hill behind Bealtaine. This is extraordinarily early to hear the Cuckoo…usually in May, or at the earliest, very late April…the seasons are coming earlier here in Ireland. The flowers on the first Wild Orchid of the year are […]

From Monoculture to Permaculture…Beyond Organic in Ireland!
From monoculture grass and cows to Pear blossom on an April evening…Permaculture. Where once was a field covered in grass and rushes, there is now an orchard and…permaculture. Blackthorn blossom through the arch… The barbed wire that once bordered this area by the cottage is gone, replaced with a new border…of plants and trees…permaculture! And […]

Good Morning Colette,
The weather is so weird, yesterday afternoon it was almost 40 and this morning below 10 degrees. The animals just don’t know what to do. The sheep haven’t ventured out of the barn yet. We will both have to keep the home fires burning today.
Missy is such a beautiful cat and she seems very serious in today picures.

Good to hear from you, Carole…weird weather is fast becoming the norm!
Missy looks a little serious as she was in the middle of attempting to hypnotise me, as only an older, wiser cat can do…maybe that’s why I do as I’m told by her glorious self, Lol!
Bealtaine Cottage Blessings on this cold day

Missy is a beauty!
I haven’t heard about Sam in a while, is he ok? I formed an immediate soft for him, perhaps due to the fact we have three adopted, snowy white cats (one profoundly deaf and two with partial deafness) that look rather like him. All three are pesently snuggled up on my bed as the snow falls ouside. It’s so bitterly cold here that the normally resilient village children were forced to abandon building a snowman.
sending warmest blessing to all at Bealtaine xx
p.s. I am thrilled with my Brigid’s cross, it’s really wonderful
It arrived a couple of days ago but my computer was playing up so I was unable to message you then. Hope you make lots of sales!

Thank you for the beautiful message you left at my shop!
Sam is spending the cold days wrapped around Che in the lodge, which is fitted with a cat-flap door, leaving Missy to the sanctuary of the cottage. She cannot tolerate either of the boys, so the geography is perfect. Sam is getting big and gorgeous…I shall include the boys in my next blog, hanging out together as they do!
Blessings from all at Bealtaine Cottage

awww…glad to hear the boys are well
I’m looking forward to seeing them again =^.^=
Quite understand Missy needing her space.
The weather is very strange lately. As Carole mentioned we go from springlike conditions to Arctic cold. The animals can’t adjust. And I had lots of little shoots coming up a few days ago…it is a little scary. I think I am with Missy..it is too cold! She wants to go out to “the other outside”….the one that was there yesterday. I know how she feels. Glad you are keeping cozy. Thank goodness for wood stoves! Take good care, Patti

Sharing this weather information is interesting. The extremities are becoming more everyday. On a lighter note, the garlic I planted a few months back will benefit from the cold spell. All the shoots are now above the earth and are looking good.
Keep warm, keep well and stay positive!
Bealtaine Blessings

My garlic came up in the fall shortly after I planted it…it is frozen in the snow now….I hope it is okay. This is my first time planting garlic. But I think it is everyone’s first time planting everything in this new climate so we will have to all learn together!
Nice one! Down here just south of Ballaghaderreen we just had the rain. Love the blog, though. In our own small way we are following you, all be it from 8-0 years behind. Our own blog effort is on http://deefer-dawg.blogspot.ie/

Good to hear from you Matt!

…just had a look at your site and we have Anne and Simon in common as friends!
It is my hope Colx that you and your readers would be interested in this. Forgive me if I am stepping out side boundaries. I have become interested in every thing weather, thou I have no training in it. I have only posted the first lines and where to get the whole report.

Sudden Stratospheric Warming Split the Polar Vortex in Two
byFishOutofWaterFollowforClimate Change SOS

Sudden stratospheric warming has split the polar vortex in two. The polar vortex, which forms and deepens as the atmosphere loses heat to space in the darkness of the long Arctic winter night, was split in two by massive heating from below. A series of intense storms in the far north Pacific intensified a very long wave in the lower atmosphere. Energy on that planet sized wave went upwards from the lower atmosphere around the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau and broke into the stratosphere, causing major sudden warming. It rapidly reversed the strong cyclonic winds in the stratosphere around the pole, creating a central dome, breaking the vortex into two smaller vortices.
We can see the splitting by making a map of the heights a weather balloon rises to to reach the very low atmospheric pressure of 50 mb. A standard atmosphere is 1013mb.
Hi Colette,
Happy New Year! Thanks for all the recent postings and best of luck with the shop – great idea! love from Terri and Lol
