The No Dig, No Till Garden

24 Apr

Amethyst Horn at Bealtaine CottageBealtaine Cottage is a permaculture smallholding, as followers of this blog know.

In permaculture we mulch, mulch and carry on mulching, building up the soil as we go.Bealtaine Cottage potager bed

Over the past two years I have been creating Potager gardens near the back of the cottage, using stone found on the land to create raised beds.

Bealtaine Cottage making the Potager beds June 2012 005Into these beds I have packed raw wool, compost, ash, leaf mould and shreddings…lots and lots, layer upon layer, of shreddings.

Plants are planted into bottomless pots onto the top of all this, so their roots can spread down deep into the goodness!

Bealtaine Cottage Potager bedThis year has seen the extending of these beds to cover yet more of the gravel.

The most useful tool in the permaculture gardens is the shredder!

Bealtaine Cottage potager beds and BuddhaI pile the shreddings on the soil, wherever there are plants growing, spreading it around the base and everywhere in-between.

Beaten earth floor in ploytunnel at Bealtaine CottageNot only does this suppress the weeds, but it feeds the soil and therefore the plants.

You can see this practice at work here in the tunnel.

Does it work? …see for yourself.

No sore back and an abundance of food!

Update on the workshop…A massive response has led me to provide three workshops in July…Sat 6th, 13th and 20th.

All are full!

Sorry if you missed this, but I will be running other workshops as the seasons progress.

A Nation That Destroys…

7 Dec

Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureA nation that destroys its soils destroys itself.

Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.

- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture No-one can dispute that statement.

We are all enlightened as to the importance of trees in our world.

Every time we breath it is because of the great lungs of our Earth.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture It really is a wonder why it isn’t the standard thing to do on the birth of a child… plant a tree…perhaps this should be mandatory, as a way of reminding every person on the planet about the life link between ourselves and trees.

Trees at Bealtaine, June 2011 004The battle we have fought, and are still fighting, for the forests is a part of the eternal conflict between right and wrong. – John Muir

Trees at Bealtaine, June 2011 007I only wish that I had more land to plant trees!

A few more acres and then some more.

Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureI would be happy planting trees until the day I die…and then to be planted into the ground with a beautiful tree to grow from me!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture So to be completely practical in the season I find myself in, I make a midwinter wish to my friends and family…a tree would make a lovely present!

Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureA growing investment for you, me and every lovely baby born today!

If you would like me to plant a tree on your behalf, or for someone dear to you, please contact me through my Etsy Shop…
