Seeds continue to be available from the permaculture gardens of Bealtaine Cottage.
These have been grown and saved each year from plants that have no contact whatsoever with chemicals and are watered with spring water or Atlantic rain.
If you would like to have seeds saved here at Bealtaine Cottage, for your own garden or allotment, you can choose from any of the following:
Purple Sprouting Broccoli
This wonderful vegetable is packed with vitamin C and iron.
I use the leaves in smoothies and eat the tender purple sprouts raw in salads or in stir fries!
Green fennel
…with beautiful yellow flowers
Beautiful to look at, make tea with, add to salads, cook and bake with!
This beautiful plant looks fantastic as a centrepiece for a sunny herb garden, or among tall perennials and grasses.
The foliage acts as a delicate veil through which the flower heads of herbaceous plants and bulbs can be seen.
Fennel grows erect with a thick root and stout stems.
The leaves grow to 40 cm long and are finely dissected into fronds. The bright golden flowers are in bloom in July and August.
Both seeds and leaves can be eaten. I love to add fennel leaves to a summer salad and also to flavour smoothies!
Aquilegia
Or know as, Columbine growing among the Blackcurrants in the permaculture gardens.
It is hardy to minus 30°C (-20°F) and self sown seedlings left to grow where they germinate are extremely drought-resistant.
It can be grown in harsh climates and further north, where its blooming period might be more restricted to May and June.
Lovage
Grows tall and strong and comes back each year, tastes like celery and is wonderful in soups!
Lovage is a perennial herb that has been long cultivated in Europe, the leaves being used as an herb, the roots as a vegetable, and the seeds as a spice, especially in southern European cuisine.
It brings fresh taste to soups, beans, fish, tomato sauces, pickles, etc.
Evening Primrose
The sweetly scented flowers of this herb open towards evening, hence the name…
Evening Primrose was once called the “King’s cure-all” by herbalists, as it was considered a panacea for treating most ailments
The whole plant is edible: the leaves can be cooked as greens, and the nutty-flavoured roots can be boiled and eaten like potatoes, parsnips, or salsify.
The flowers make an especially lovely salad garnish.
The seeds are used to produce evening primrose oil.

Sage
Sage is traditionally used in cooking and adds a unique taste to food, however, Sage is also a very important ceremonial herb.
Sage is used to clear negative energy and as a natural incense or smudge.
Sage can be used as a blessing, disinfectant and to purify a space.
Oregano Used to bring happiness, strength, vitality, and additional energy.
Oregano is best known for its culinary uses.
However, like all herbs, it has magical properties as well.
Greeks crowned newly-wed couples with boughs of oregano to wish them joy in their marriage.
Oregano has a lot of medicinal use – oregano poultices can be applied to insect bites and aching joints.
This magical herb is used to brew an oregano tea which is said to protect against negative energy.
Plant oregano in front of your home to ward against negative energy.
Catnip
There is a video on the Bealtaine Cottage YouTube channel that shows MissyCat getting very high on this incredible herb…watch it and order some for your cat.
This dried herb is very potent and your cat will only need a small amount…it’s amazing!

Fennel
Fennel is rich in minerals like copper, iron, potassium, selenium, zinc, magnesium as well as vitamins A, C, E and many of the B complex group
Use the seeds to cook with.
Many people claim that fennel can help calm bloating and indigestion, improve eyesight and milk production in nursing mothers as well as helping to fight halitosis and mouth inflammations.
It is also widely held that steam from boiling fennel can be inhaled for relief in respiratory infections like asthma and bronchitis.

I was looking for a way to contact you about the seeds- can’t find any. Unfortunately it would be a while before I could make a donation- but I could perhaps trade you seeds of my own or some sort of other exchange? Just started growing this year. I’ve transformed my overgrown garden into a place I find food and peace. I’m so sad to hear about the seed ban.. And can’t help but feel I’ve started too late!

The EU tried the ban, but were forced back because of public anger. it is on the cards though, as Monsanto edge their insidious and monstrous way into Europe.
Seeds are being harvested and will not be featured on the website until early Autumn on the Celtic Calendar…that’s August!
I live very comfortably here at Bealtaine Cottage, however, actual money is in short supply, so postage can be a problem! I do try to facilitate those who cannot make a donation, so do let me know after I put the seeds up on the site and I shall see what I can do!

Such generosity ❤ My seeds are doing well and I am glad of these stunning images on such a grey day.
At least in my patch we are free of snow, I feel so sad for the pregnant ewes and new born lambs that have been buried in it, when they would normally be cavourting happily in spring grass. My daughter said she is not sad because if she were a lamb she would rather pass away peacefully as a new born from hypothermia than end her life in the slaughter house at a more aware five months. She is also ranting that these beautiful creatures are labelled ‘stock’.
My son once at the age of seven asked me if I had heard there were tribes of people that ate other people. When I affirmed that I had heard of this, he continued saying that one day in the future he felt humans would feel just as shocked by their ancestors eating animals as today’s society are by those that ate humans. I wonder if this will be?
I hope that all are safe and warm at Bealtaine Cottage.

I love to see the lambs out in the fields, but am all too aware of their fate. I haven’t eaten meat in years and have now lost my taste for it. Many of my friends are meat eaters though love the vegan food I cook and bake.

Thank you so kindly for your generosity in sharing seeds. You’ll be happy to hear of a regular series of events in Toronto, Canada at this time of year called Seedy Saturdays. I volunteered at a seed exchange this past Saturday where people brought in seeds and took seeds away. There were dozens of local, organic, vegetable seeds being shared. It was lovely to witness and to introduce people who had never heard of such a thing. They were shocked to hear that they could take as many seeds as they’d like, for either any seeds in exchange, a cash donation, or nothing at all. Sharing seeds is so simple, yet so profoundly powerful. Thank you for being a part of it.
I agree…it is a wonderful movement and we have been doing this here in the west of Ireland for several years now.
We also have a Plant Swap Sunday about 6 weeks later for folks to do the same process and it’s always very well attended!
Great to hear other people across the world doing same.

Hi Colette, I hope you are having a warmer time of it than we are – it is bitterly cold here but at least it is dry and the wind is dying down. I would like to order some seeds but the donate button is not responding – it could be my old computer, but check it out just in case. I would like some Evening Primrose, Columbine and Lunaria. (Are they perennial?) I will pop payment in the post seeing as button is not working. Thanks. We are going to the organic centre for a course on 8th June. Can we pop in and see you on 7th – Friday and if so can you recommend any B&Bs near by?

The seeds you have ordered are biennial, but they self seed and you can collect or simply leave them to flourish where they fall…I do!
You can stay here, as the lodge will be free at that time and there’s a double bed in there and a wood-burning stove if you’re cold!
