The economic crisis, that became evident to all in October 2008, has never really been discussed in the mainstream media. 
Much of what could, and should, have been put in place by national governments, to ameliorate the dreadful effects of this crisis, have been blatantly air-brushed from the media and political debate!
We continue to be sold the illusion of full employment for all.
As direct fallout from the media hype around this lie, many people are feeling inadequate and hopeless, believing it to be their fault that they are job-less.
The media has demonized the unemployed and disabled, citing examples of welfare abuse, whilst ignoring the very real struggles many good people face in their everyday lives!
Governments have introduced all kinds of hoops and hurdles, that intimidate those seeking employment, into a state of hopelessness and despair.
Leadership, has and continues to, fail us!
Governments are aware that carbon reductions in relation to Climate Change cannot facilitate Economic Growth in the present paradigm, but resist any debate or discussion on this!
Government GDP figures do not take into consideration any guide to National Well-being, including health, food, clean air, clean water etc.
Fracking is part of GDP for example, as that produces a commodity to be sold, but look at the utter shambles it leaves in its’ wake, for local people to have to deal with!
Poisoned water, devastated land, sick children…the list goes on!
We are on-board a rudder-less ship with a drunk Captain and crew…time to lower the life-boats and row towards resilience, community and sustainable living!
When this ship goes down it will take everyone on board with it!
I’m in the US, too, and it’s just as dismal as you’ve described. So many struggle, and my grown son needs gov’t assistance because his FULL-TIME plus OVERTIME job doesn’t enable him to make ends meet (but he won’t file for it). He lives in near poverty without luxury. I know a lot of others like him, and the problem is just going to get worse. We here at Wild Ozark are working toward sustainability so there is at least a roof and food for the family if worse comes to worse.
Perhaps the future really is about food, shelter and clean water…and that is what we need to develop and protect now. I have been drawn towards this life by a force greater than I can articulate, as have many others…therein lies some kind of awakening! Perhaps the time has come for us to rethink our value systems. The early morning news this morning was bemoaning the fact that Chinese growth and production has slowed down. We cannot have this continued growth surely. The blinkered mindset of politicians and corporates is so destructive.

Everyday I wonder how do We the People survive the massive power of Corporate America. Most of our unskilled jobs have been shipped overseas leaving a wake of unemployment as a result. The unemployed have little option to help themselves out of poverty. Certain political parties scream that the unemployed deserve to be poor. That the unemployed deserve to starve and die from a lack of medical care. Even our Supreme Court (at least some of the justices) have turned against We the People in declaring that Corporations are People with the ability to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections (something real, breathing people aren’t allowed to do). On top of that voter suppression tactics are everywhere trying to keep down the few people who might actually turn out to vote. We live in desperate times.
It is indeed a desperate situation and fast becoming comparable to the “Hungry Thirties,” as people become dis-enfranchised from society. Government and political parties are not engaging with the problems many people are having to face everyday, alone!

Excellent! Trouble is that people who are getting on with a sustainable way of life are just not at all interesting to the great enterprises, including banks and governments. All those huge shopping malls etc. would be empty if they relied on people like us! I’m just keeping my head down.
You are doing the right thing. though I have spent the past few years opening my home and gardens to people who want to change and need to see an alternative way of living in action. Change is coming and is inevitable…still time to build resilience!
