The Days Between Light and Dark

Bright sun illuminating the garden, gave way to the gentle, patter-drip-patter of rain, as it slowly enveloped the cottage.

The great change is steadily colouring the sights and sounds of Bealtaine Cottage.

Curly Kale can tolerate the changes well, needing much less light than many other vegetables…this is a good Winter green to ensure health and vitality as the daylight lessens.

The days between light and dark merge as we approach the Equinox…the balancing point before the descent towards Midwinter.

Spiders busily spin and weave and everywhere the light dances playfully.

Green turns slowly in the mixing pot of early autumn colours that inspire dreams of drifting through woodland, kicking up leaves in a playful, seasonal dance of joy.

What lies beyond this Equinox is a time filled with darker evenings, not to be scorned, but embraced as a time to rest, nurture and be nurtured.

As we enjoy this late Summer glory, the days of “mist and mellow fruitfulness,” lie ahead…what a beautiful time of year this is!

Walking the gardens here this morning is sheer Heaven on Earth.

“Fall has always been my favourite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”

  1. I shall save this, and try to absorb its wisdom…. I just love Spring and Summer, long light evenings, not having to wear loads of clothes etc. Autumn is beautiful, but I find it somewhat melancholic, and around October I just start counting the days to March…. not a good way to approach life I know!!!!

  2. A wonderful post! It reflects my thoughts perfectly, as Autumn is my favourite season. Lately I have been making jams to eat in the winter. As I eat them, I’ll remember these hot, late summer days even though it may be cold and snowing outside. Just the thought will remind me that summer will, indeed, return once more and I’d better gather my strength for the labours needed once spring returns!

  3. Lovely post! Although I am a summer bunny at heart, as I grow older I am far more appreciative of every season in its turn. No longer does winter seem like a waste of days, any more than night seems like a waste of hours; we all need rest & renewal and time to reflect & consider. And crisp autumn days out kicking through the leaves & gathering nuts, elderberries, sloes & crab apples, or watching the soft rain turn the grasses green again, compensate for the loss of the sun on my skin, sea foam between my toes and the chance to sleep under the stars!
