While Rome Burns…

There are no solutions to the instability in the world that I care to offer, as my voice is irrelevant in the scheme of things that cause mayhem and war.

I can only offer advice on what works for me…on what keeps me sane in a world filled with lunacy!

Keep grounded!

Do what you have to do and do it well!

Look ahead into the seasons and make plans for planting, working, visiting and caring for the world around you.

Think about ways in which you can heal the world around you, be positive and nurture.

Don’t allow the mayhem to grind you down…life went on after the Fall of Rome, as well we know!

Remember, even as war, austerity and breakdown of society is happening right now in countries around the globe, people continue to look after their children, grow food, make food, wash clothes and generally get on with life as best they can.

For all the negative and dreadful news we are battered with on a daily basis, remember there are real people around you doing good things!

The mainstream media rarely reports on good people.

I can say, with absolute certainty,  there are many more good people on this Earth than bad…and sometimes, those we perceive to be bad are just hurting.

  1. This is the most appealing website I have seen for a very long time, and it is enough to coax me out of my self-imposed seclusion for a moment.

I just wondered why you put “I can say, with absolute certainty, there are many more good people on this Earth than bad…and sometimes, those we perceive to be bad are just hurting.” They are certainly ideas I’d like to entertain, but over 60 years of being abused, neglected, exploited and deceived has left me struggling to contain my misanthropy. With any luck you are right and I am wrong, but I am interested to learn what your opinion of Homo rapiens is based.

Best wishes from a permaculture garden in Denmark

    • Good morning Alan from a sunny autumn day here in the west of Ireland.
I can say with absolute certainty, because it is my life experience. For my part, the good people, those who care and nourish humanity, just getting on with it, are in the majority…and why we are all still here I suppose. If people did not care we would barely get past the baby stage of our existence. I find myself at this stage of my life being an advocate for humanity and it does surprise me at times, but I can only speak as I find. I find great joy in new life…all life. It is joy that connects us to the Divine and feeds the best of our humanity.
Blessings to you, Alan. Blessings of contentment and hope.

      • Thank you for all that Colette; your attitude resembles that of Abraham Maslow, whose basic assumption was that human nature on a scale of virtue is either neutral or somewhat good, but certainly not bad. In his opinion, most bad behaviour is due to people’s needs not being met, and if they are satisfied then they behave themselves or even do good.

I am sorry to say that I have seen far too much that contradicts Maslow, who I conclude was born into relatively privileged circumstances, spent his whole adult life in academic circles, and as far as I can tell never had to contend with wicked people. Not that I think these things of you, for I know nothing other than what you have written.

Anyway, I shall follow your blog and read what others have to say, and with any luck I shall learn something new and positive about people. But while doing so, I shall continue my peaceful, secluded lifestyle and avoid any unnecessary contact with others.

By the way, I noticed you dry sage and thyme! Why is that? Even in the harshest Danish winter conditions I have lovely fresh sage and thyme – except of course in late spring when they flower. Can’t beat fresh herbs I’d say.

        • My background is one of acute impoverishment…one of 11 children growing up in a 2 bedroomed terraced (in Northern Ireland during the “Troubles”) house with no facilities other than cold running water. I keep that as my baseline! I dry herbs to burn them as incense…beautiful and cleansing.
          Blessings X

  3. I like the positive attitude. I do believe that all those we see as the enemy ARE hurting – otherwise they wouldn’t do what do they do. And we are all culpable in some way so all we can do is our best with good intention. The kitchen is looking great with the new arrangement. Sending our love and best wishes. xx

  4. I agree with you that people are mostly good and don’t mean to be bad. Sad that so little in the mainstream media is reported of the good… Perhaps if it was, there would be more good to celebrate!

  5. Thank you for these heartfelt words, it is comforting to know there are people who carry on despite the current state of the world.

  6. Never underestimate your beautiful power of One! You are a continual inspiration to many, myself included. Ripples in water, your influence grows and grows. Thank you! Big hugs from the mountains of rural North Carolina, USA! 🙂

  7. A heart-warming post Colette in a world that seems cold and uncaring. Your words brought the tears to my eyes. It is very difficult to feel peace and contentment when surrounded by suffering – of both people and also of our beautiful planet. Simplicity, frugality, respect, empathy and kindness are good practice when faced with the madness that is everywhere at the moment. The concept of ‘enough’ has been all but lost. Your daily practice makes me think of the following:-

The industrialist was horrified to find the fisherman lying beside his boat, smoking his pipe.

-Why aren’t you fishing? said the industrialist.

-Because I have caught enough fish for the day, said the fisherman.

-Why don’t you catch some more?

-What would I do with them?

-Earn more money. Then you could have a motor fitted to your boat and go into deeper waters and catch more fish. That would bring you money to buy nylon nets, so more fish, and more money. Soon you would have enough to buy two boats, even a fleet of boats. Then you would be rich like me.

    -What would I do then?

-Then you could sit back and enjoy life.

-What do you think I’m doing now?

It would be a very different world if we all thought this way. Love and light xxx
