Magical Evening of Ostara at Bealtaine Cottage

This is the evening of Ostara, the Spring Equinox…of equal day and night.

The Great Turning of the year as Spring moves with joy towards the Summer and Bealtaine, the first of May.

A magical time.

The word Ostara is just one of the names given to the celebration of the Spring Equinox, also known as the Vernal Equinox, on March 20 this year.

The March equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from south to north.

This happens on March 19, 20 or 21 every year.

The Venerable Bede said the origin of the word Ostara is actually from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring.

Solstices and equinoxes mark key stages in the astronomical cycle of Mother Earth.

Each year there are two equinoxes (spring and autumn) and two solstices (summer and winter).

  1. Through my exploration of a more natural way of life I have also been looking to celebrating these seasonal festivals. I hope to celebrate Ostara this year, but I will probably be doing it alone. Hopefully I find a way to make it a special day much like you have had. Blessings!

  2. Dear Colette Yesterday your precious book arrived safety. So excited, just like Christmas morning as a child. This luscious green covered book felt vibrant and alive. I held my very own piece of Bealtaine Cottage in my hands
inscribed to me. Wow! So many beautiful photo, lots of heartfelt words. Want to read it now, but no, will savour every word slowly, sitting beside a cosy stove in my cottage or in my garden, sipping herbal tea where lots of Bealtaine cottage plants and seedlings are thriving.( So glad I have a huge Bealtaine Chinese Forget me not with striking blue flowers, shining out in the snow this morning!) Thanks for the recent videos. They are very special as is the peach flowers on your outdoor peach trees. Looking forward to your next book . Margaret

  3. I have a question. This has always confused me: when determining how to place your bed, and some of the literature says to have “your head pointed” in certain directions, does that mean you will be FACING that direction:ie. north, or does it mean the BACK of your head is toward that direction?!
