Splashed with pink…the Ribes (Flowering Currant), is one of the first great feasts for the Bees, all wild here at Bealtaine Cottage. This photograph was snapped last night around 7pm as the light was fading in the western sky.

Awash with pink…the light is very magical as dusk descends…never any filters used, just the magic of the light! This was snapped at around 7pm last evening.

Collette you are a talented photographer. I bet that if you sold some as A4 prints, maybe in a limited run, over a limited time people would buy them for their walls.
I also enjoyed your Friday video. I too buy only organic compost, but have often wondered, why not biodegradable hessian sacks?
I suppose nurseries would have to keep damp, and they might get rodents, but if they employed more than 2 men and a dog to run them…

peaceful sanctuary needs embellishing. I love to hear the crunch of the gravel as you walk about.
Jack is a very old soul and a Sidhe. I also think the Robin and small wee little bird is perhaps
your Mother’s way of keeping watch over the place she loved and a daughter she adored.

Thank you so much Collette for the peaks into life at Bealtaine. Wow, spring is looking gorgeous at your place. I love the pink flowers in the pot, with what looks like a poppy plant behind. What are they? I’d like to get more in the garden at this time for the early bees. Also I’m amazed how your paths are so weed and grass free! Do you have weed suppressing material below? I saw you did that around your flowerbeds in one video. You have inspired me for years, and that you are so relaxed with it all, thank you and I aspire to that! Your Ribes look amazing, such big flowers!
No weed suppressant as I avoid plastic on the ground wherever possible.
I am using a thick, clear plastic 20 feet long and 5 feet wide from a giant roll my son gave me by surprise. I decided it was meant to solarize a section of the organic garden to work for the betterment of the soil. 1. kill pathogens like anthracnose, blight 2. to warm the early April soil to stimulate weed seed so it can be hoed off before sowing carrots, radishes, lettuce, onion, spinach, arugula, mizuna, bok choi, Swiss chard, beets, turnips, etc. 3. to draw up invasive jumping worms from Asia as they destroy the soil and rob it from nutrients. 4. eradicate insect eggs like cutworms, wireworms, etc. Because I depend on the food I grow for myself, and at age 70, it’s difficult to grow food in unmanaged rows when a million weeds take over. I add fresh well rotted compost to the bed after hoeing out weed seedlings, and amend with ground egg shells, coffee grinds, diatomaceous earth, and a little organic fertilizer. I interplant and enjoy seeing the confusion of veggies all intermingling happily with one another. Big on companion planting. I sprinkle white alyssum throughout as this sweet flower attracts hover flies – very beneficial. At my age, weed prevention in very early Spring is necessary. I recycle cardboard for weed control. In the blueberry, asparagus and rhubarb patches, this must be done very early so not to disturb the roots. I enjoy your morning walks. Thank you. Linda from Long Island, New York.
Bealtaine is so lovely in her Spring Pink, and your little barn so neat in her new, freshly laid, crunchy gravel. I love Ribes, here in California we have a native one that has super fragrant leaves. The hummers adore it. The black bees are out feeding on tree collard flowers in my garden. They are almost comical bumping into each other; of course nectar procurement is serious business for them. I have hundreds of violet seedlings sprouting, and a little bird landed in my lap the other morning; it surprised us both. Indeed it is joyful to greet Spring. I have so appreciated your last few videos of Bealtaine, the light itself seems tinted pink! These podcasts are also a welcomed bit of joy in my home so far away from yours. Stunning as usual, I agree entirely, those obsessed with cleaning up every leaf and twig that dares to drop are completely missing the joy of helping other beings to thrive, yesterday i watched while collared doves and blackbirds collected bits and bobs from last years chop and drop to make their nests, and isn’t it amazing to see little ladybirds and bees sheltering in this so called mess? Food for the soul!
