Awakening

There is a spiritual event taking place…a coming into awareness of something so fundamentally awesome and life changing that is spreading into the consciousness of all life. This awakening can be described in simple terms and that is what I want to do here…simply explain it from my own perspective. The power of love is building compassion and understanding in all of us. As with great change comes great extremes too; for the power of destruction is cutting a swathe through life as we have known it. We are now aware that we are not alone, but one consciousness that is…

Easiest Ever Compost Toilet

The post you’ve all been waiting for…the Bealtaine Cottage Compost Toilet. Easy to install and simple to use. No running outside on cold mornings to tramp across wet grass to use the toilet! This is located in the bathroom…not quite a bathroom though as I took out the bath and installed a shower instead!  There’s still a little bit of tweaking to be done to finish the project off to a high standard, like decorating the wall where the cistern used to be and making a wooden surround with a small door, but as you can see, it is simple…

Bottling Summer

The old tin bath has been taken down from the wall of the barn. Used wine bottles are left to steep for a few hours in rainwater. Washed and clean, ready to be filled with home-made Blackcurrant wine. There is always at least one day during the Summer, when one feels enthusiastic enough to overcome the reluctance to get stuck into bottling wine…today, all the right chords were struck and the work began! Cork stoppers were duly washed and left to soak and soften, till, finally… the wine was securely bottled! All that remains to be done is labelling…Chateau Bealtaine!…

Summer Cottage

The heat of the day subsides into late evening. A gloriously hot and sultry summer day. The birds appear to have wakened in the cool of evening, filling the air with song and calls, as though they’d spent the day in the shade of the nest, keeping still and cool. The grass paths are mowed in the upper gardens and plants cut back to allow safe passage. This is Ireland at her best, with long cool evenings complete with blue sky until nearly the witching hour. Just as the fragrant roses have gone over on the veranda, archways of…

Otherworldly…

Sunday afternoon…picking flowers in the gardens. This feels like the full, quiet days before giving birth… The force of the full moon can still be felt in the stillness of the late afternoon air. There is an otherworldly feel to it all… Time appears to stand very still. Bees continue in a frenzy of work on this side of the Solstice. I have often felt a slowness as time ascends towards Midsummer…it’s as though Mother Earth is not yet ready to let go… Evenings merge with night as daylight seems eternal in the west of Ireland…Ox-Eye Daisies reach up toward…

Ascending Towards Midsummer

This is not colour enhanced, but the vivid colours between storms here in the west of Ireland! The buds are still thickening, yet the life is visible in the stems, sky and emerging green…isn’t it simply wonderful to be able to witness the Spring as it progresses, slowly, tentatively through the landscape? This is the skyline above the Arigna Mountains, with a Rainbow, flopped over the ridge of the hill! I watched this from the window, then rushed out with camera in hand to snap the moment! I feel blessed to be a part of the Spring, waking earlier, walking…

EU Pimping Monoculture Failure!

Mist prevails as the earth slowly heats, releasing some of the water absorbed during the wettest winter on record here in Ireland. The air is still and birdsong echoes through the foggy dew… The first of the seeds are now sown in a big fish box in the tunnel, made from thick, white polystyrene, once marked out for the dump but rescued and up-cycled here at Bealtaine Cottage…perfect for seeds and young plants! There’s a digger at work on the hill of Ballyfermoyle, I hear it’s machinations echoing through the misty morning. Young trees and bushes are being torn up…

A Year at Bealtaine…part 2

Nine years of planting trees into barren, north-facing land has now awoken a magical earth, with paths that lead forever among dappled shade. And every now and then open up into a secret garden… …or two… Some paths get overgrown fast as Nature’s abundance keeps giving. The thousands of plants all jostle for space… and are now self-seeding, like this little Cherry tree growing next to an Oak! Willow arches that lead into the Fairy Wood at Midsummer. The delicate blossom on the Mountain Ash, also known as the Rowan Tree. A place for tea in the garden on long…

Permaculture Woodland

Isn’t he lovely? This little Robin followed me around the gardens today as I walked Jack. I say the gardens, but after spending time walking all the paths, I am now of the opinion that I have 3 acres of woodland…and am delighted at the ongoing transformation from bare, barren, rushy fields, to magical, thronging-with-life, woodland! The trees have dropped a huge lot of leaves this year and the paths have taken on a woodland feel,  as I walk, kicking up the colourful debris. Such an amazing amount of wood to be cut this winter…and that’s only in tidying up,…
