A Place To Be Endured

Autumn in permaculture at bealtainecottage.com 010

As a species on this Earth, we are separated from other life forms by consciousness, in that we are aware of our own existence.

In being aware, we are able to make conscious choices every day, as we proceed through the maze of miracles and events that makes up our lives. Autumn in permaculture at bealtainecottage.com 012

“Live like a tree, giving, forgiving and free.”
Debasish Mridha M.D.

The best choices we make are those that involve, in some way or another, a generosity of spirit, for in those choices we give. Autumn in permaculture at bealtainecottage.com 013

I was walking the gardens this morning…really I should say, woodland, for that is what it has become, and pondering on the way in which all this manifested.

Autumn in permaculture at bealtainecottage.com 014

It began with an unblinking, unfettered generosity of spirit…a conscious choice to simply plant trees into a land bereft of habitat.

Growing and planting trees from seed has been my work over the past ten years.

Growing trees has been the work of Mother Nature for hundreds of thousands of years.

However, at this point in time, Mother Nature, Mother Earth, needs our help…for she is so badly damaged by humankind!

For my part, I continue to sow seeds of mighty trees in small pots…to give away with a generous heart, to the hundreds of annual visitors to Bealtaine.

So many of you have made this sacred journey with me, planting trees wherever you live, in countries all over the Earth.

“I have come to the conclusion that imperialism and exploitation are forms of cannibalism and, in fact, are precisely those forms of cannibalism which are most diabolical or evil.”

“Wherever forests have not been mowed down, wherever the animal is recessed in their quiet protection, wherever the Earth is not bereft of four-footed life – that to the white man is an ‘unbroken wilderness.’

But for us there was no wilderness, nature was not dangerous but hospitable, not forbidding but friendly. Our faith sought the harmony of man with his surroundings; the other sought the dominance of surroundings.

For us, the world was full of beauty; for the other, it was a place to be endured until he went to another world.

But we were wise. We knew that man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard.”
Chief Luther Standing Bear

To plant and restore the sacred Earth means that it will never be “a place to be endured…”

We choose!

A Nation That Destroys…

Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureA nation that destroys its soils destroys itself.

Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.

– Franklin D. Roosevelt

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture No-one can dispute that statement.

We are all enlightened as to the importance of trees in our world.

Every time we breath it is because of the great lungs of our Earth.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture It really is a wonder why it isn’t the standard thing to do on the birth of a child… plant a tree…perhaps this should be mandatory, as a way of reminding every person on the planet about the life link between ourselves and trees.

Trees at Bealtaine, June 2011 004The battle we have fought, and are still fighting, for the forests is a part of the eternal conflict between right and wrong. – John Muir

Trees at Bealtaine, June 2011 007I only wish that I had more land to plant trees!

A few more acres and then some more.

Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureI would be happy planting trees until the day I die…and then to be planted into the ground with a beautiful tree to grow from me!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture So to be completely practical in the season I find myself in, I make a midwinter wish to my friends and family…a tree would make a lovely present!

Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureA growing investment for you, me and every lovely baby born today!

A Life in the Country ~ Buddha, Permaculture and Growing…

What we think, we become. Buddha

Thinking plants and gardens and growing…I suppose I have become a person who is in love with the Earth!

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.

Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.

Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.  ~Buddha

Permaculture wine…because, all the fruit is grown here at Bealtaine Smallholding using permaculture methods and every aspect of the wine making process is carried out in a sustainable way.

Even the demijohns have been sourced as recycled/upcycled.

I’m reading ‘Blackberry Wine,’ by Joanne Harris at present and one of the central characters, ‘Joe,’ is definitely a permie!

It’s a great read!

A reminder from a few months back…and yes I planted trees and a lot more than 50.

As for the Blackcurrants, I have taken to planting them along the ditches here and into the hedges…planting a slip at a time!

Trees are very precious to me.

I have lived here for 7 years and planted over 600 to date with plans for more!

Plant as though your life depends on it…because it does!

We could not exist as we do if there were no trees.

A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year.

Forests  act as  giant filters  that clean the air we breath.

 Trees Shade and Cool

Shade resulting in cooling is what a tree is best known for.

Shade from trees reduces the need for air conditioning in summer.

In winter, trees break the force of winter winds, lowering heating costs.

Studies have shown that parts of cities without cooling shade from trees can literally be “heat islands” with temperatures as much as 12 degrees Fahrenheit higher than surrounding areas.

Permaculture Cottage ~ Sustainable Living, Willow and Trees

All the ingredients to make Autumn Chutney are in the pot and heating up on the stove. The apples are from the trees here at Bealtaine. Onions were grown here as well. The stove is burning wood grown here also…which all adds to the sustainability of living…and living well.

I posted the recipe for this last night…so you can easily find it on the previous day…just scroll down and click on the link to go back…

Delicious and top quality as all the ingredients are sourced or grown by myself. Shop bought chutneys just come anywhere near this stuff taste-wise!

And lots of material for the compost heaps… All the apples used in this chutney were windfalls!

I have been reading a lot of stuff on Twitter recently about how pointless it is to plant trees and the importance of protecting our woodlands and forests! Well, the latter I do agree wholeheartedly with, but as for the pointessness of planting new trees…that’s just damned silly! Anyone who has planted a tree in their lifetime will testify to that!

Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,
We fell them down and turn
them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness.
~Kahlil Gibran

Seven years ago there were NO trees here on this land…just some in the rather neglected hedges that skirted the land. All you see on the blogs I post are trees that I have planted…over 600 to date. the willow I am harvesting in this photo is a catch crop, planted inbetween the actual trees.

However, there is another very important reason to plant trees and willow and anything else you can think of…biodiversity and wildlife!

Those same people who believe it futile to plant trees should ask the little bird who built this nest if it was futile!

It is amazing just how much we can create from nothing with the magic of Gaia. This was a rod of willow I just stuck into the ground…

Real change needs to grow from the roots up…that means ourselves, individually and collectively getting on with it…creating the world we want to live in.
