So Grateful

IMG_6042Mother Earth is thriving.

IMG_6039Her abundance is nothing less than magnificent.

IMG_6037Everywhere on this land She thrives.

IMG_6048I have found a great many Cherry Trees She has seeded and grown over the past two years, but have remained hidden in the general mayhem of Spring and Summer, only to be discovered this year as Spring seemed to struggle and lag behind, so allowing me to see.IMG_6043

It is simply delightful to behold. The mother tree was planted by me a mere 13 yrs ago and already she has brought forth abundance.

IMG_6036

This Field Maple is bearing fruit this year and the Bees are soaring around its topmost branches.

IMG_6083

I know that I have posted this quote before, but it speaks loudly and will not be quietened…IMG_6084

“Wherever forests have not been mowed down, wherever the animal is recessed in their quiet protection, wherever the earth is not bereft of four-footed life – that to the white man is an ‘unbroken wilderness.’ IMG_6080

But for us there was no wilderness, nature was not dangerous but hospitable, not forbidding but friendly. Our faith sought the harmony of man with his surroundings; the other sought the dominance of surroundings.IMG_6079

For us, the world was full of beauty; for the other, it was a place to be endured until he went to another world.IMG_6077

But we were wise. We knew that man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard.”
― Chief Luther Standing Bear

IMG_6076“Kinship with all creatures of the earth, sky, and water was a real and active principle.

IMG_6073In the animal and bird world there existed a brotherly feeling that kept us safe among them…

IMG_6075The animals had rights – the right of man’s protection, the right to live, the right to multiply, the right to freedom, and the right to man’s indebtedness.

IMG_6074This concept of life and its relations filled us with the joy and mystery of living; it gave us reverence for all life; it made a place for all things in the scheme of existence with equal importance to all.”
― Chief Luther Standing Bear

IMG_6072And so wherever we allow Her, enable Her and protect Her, abundance flows…

IMG_6071It’s humbling to witness…

IMG_6070

My Goddess helps me to keep in mind the great Life Force of the Great Mother, for I, as a human need symbols to ground me and remember that She is not just a life-force, but an intelligent sentient being.

IMG_6069Symbols have always resonated with us.

IMG_6067IMG_6066IMG_6064IMG_6063We possess an innate ability to read and understand symbols, for they transcend language and culture.

Yet even as I walk back along the veranda towards the door of the cottage, I see the abundance.

IMG_6086This time in a recently re-potted tree…lots of tiny Parsley seedlings. I have no idea where they have come from, except to add that I used home made compost and these are from the seed-heads of last Summer.

Envisioning the “Impossible”

DSC00742Envisioning the end is enough to put the means in motion.  ~Dorothea Brande

DSC00745Many people ask me, time and again,

“Where did you begin planting, Colette?”

“Did you have a plan?”

DSC00747The answer is simple, as is much of what I do and how I live my life…no plans, just a vision!

DSC00746The power of envisioning is just beginning to be understood.

DSC00748Much has been said about this process and, as yet, we have only a small level of understanding how it works, but the process of manifestation is a powerful one indeed.

DSC00749Dreaming is the first step to becoming.

To dream of the time ahead is to welcome an inner fold of reality we long for but have not yet realized.

It is an act not just of hope but of inspiration.

~Paul H. Ray and Sherry Ruth Anderson

DSC00750At a time when hope seems to be marginalized, almost cast aside, as the grim reality of the world today pervades our lives, creating a vision of a better world can be a powerful beginning.

DSC00751I don’t have a television in my home…that leaves a wonderful void to be filled, and I fill it with imagination and creativity.

DSC00752Simply unleashing our imaginations can be empowering.

~Paul Rogat Loeb

DSC00753We really have such little understanding of the power of our imaginations.

DSC00754Yet most of us are aware of the ways in which a troubled mind can manifest and create chaos and unhappiness!

DSC00755If one, then the other (opposite), is equally possible!

DSC00756If we cannot envision the world we would like to live in, we cannot work towards its creation.  If we cannot place ourselves in it in our imagination, we will not believe it is possible.

~Chellis Glendinning

DSC00757My vision was always one of co-creating with the Goddess, a Garden of Eden.

DSC00758One of abundance and beauty.

DSC00759A tribute to Mother Earth.

DSC00760I veered away from straight lines, squares, harshness that implied dominance.

DSC00761I wanted to coax Her into life, reassure Her that this would be Her garden.

DSC00763Everything seems to indicate that we must not be afraid of dreaming the seemingly impossible if we want the seemingly impossible to become a reality.

~Václav Havel

DSC00762And so it is…

The Bealtaine Project is a full-time labour of love for Colette O’Neill, aiming to encourage and support those wishing to live more sustainably “with” rather than “on”” Mother Earth.

To this end, Colette writes, photographs, films and podcasts regularly every day in multi media form.

Your support is appreciated

As Evening Descends…

Towards the end of a perfect day at Bealtaine Cottage. The gardens are looking well tended as the evening descends. Strawberries have been potted up in hanging baskets and seedlings rescued from the gravel around the cottage and potted up. These will make fine plants for the Summer ahead! And…all the while…the birds sing!

Garden in February (Part One)

008

The year in the garden is now well under way, as Mother Earth awakens in a very visible way…not that she ever slept!

www.bealtainecottage.com

Coltsfoot is one of the first herbs to come into flower, for it flowers before it leafs and a very welcome sight this is!

www.bealtainecottage.com

Bronze fennel, that most vigorous of herbs and also a brilliant addition to the flower garden, starts to produce tasty leaves that can be added to early Spring salads.

Rocket has over-wintered well in the tunnel and forms the base ingredient.

www.bealtainecottage.com

Daffodils are now up and beginning to flower.

Daffodils on the hill above the cottage, around an old abandoned dwelling are in full bloom!

www.bealtainecottage.com

Reminders of Winter come and go, but not for long, sometimes just an hour or two of a light dusting of snow.

Never enough to hold back the advance of the seasons!

But beware the wind chill factor that comes with early Spring and wrap up warm when venturing out to work in the garden!

Rhubarb in a permaculture garden

When the sun does shine, it is truly glorious and plants like Rhubarb spring into exuberant life!

A very hungry plant, Rhubarb eats up a generous dressing of well-rotted manure.

Euphorbia at Bealtaine Cottage

Euphorbia comes into life in the flower garden…here it shares a half barrel with a Fig Tree and both like each other’s company!

In fact, the Fig has fruited well year on year since getting a new bed fellow!

An old but treasured book is always at hand to delve into for advice on seasonal food, gardening and outdoors work!

I wonder if this little gem is still in print?

Beautiful catkins on the Hazel trees…flowers in fact!

Bealtaine Cottage frogs in the pond

The pond is filling with frogspawn and clumps of frogs celebrating the turn in the year as only frogs can!

Out in the hen-house the girls are in touch with the growing of the light as they come back into lay!

Fox in the garden at Bealtaine Cottage

Mr and Mrs Fox are hungry and on the prowl! I often lay out food at night for the foxes, for the way I see it is simply this: we have interfered with the food chain by removing the animals that would have predated upon foxes.

This is my way of attempting to live in harmony as best I can…and ensuring that the girls in the henhouse are well protected!

Permaculture Cottage ~ Rain, beautiful rain!

The rain came today. It was so very welcome!

The sky was heavy with water this afternoon.

Every container that could hold water is now full!

Rain fell on the velvet smooth petals of the Pansy.

Streams of rain overspilled from the gutter…it bucketed down!

Rain. Water. The water of life. Thank you for watering Bealtaine today.

No Money, just Abundance! Permaculture @ Bealtaine Smallholding, Ireland

Through a glass darkly…April Fool in the garden, reflection from a mirror.

Today is the first of April and the radio is talking about economic growth, again, and will continue to do ad infinatum…the only growth worth talking about is what happens here, on earth, on terra firma and there is so much growth it can be difficult keeeping up with it. The government’s economic growth for Ireland is only to pay back ginormous debts to Europe! Growth here, at Bealtaine is about food, fuel, wildlife, love and happiness…permaculture paradise.

No money…but, no poverty…I look around me at abundance, on this, the first day of April.

Flower buds on the redcurrant promises an abundance of fruit, which in turn promises an abundance of wine and puddings and jam and jelly and…no money, but no poverty!

Fruit trees and bushes, interspersed in hedges promise abundance, fruit for chutney, freezing, fruit butter, pies, cordials…no money, but no poverty…abundance!

No need to buy peanuts for the birds at Bealtaine…no money for peanuts, but, abundance of food to sustain a wide and varied bird population. Spindle in the foreground…
