The Arrogance of Certainty

IMG_2440Thirteen years ago I made a decision to follow my heart and return to Ireland, with a mighty quest.

IMG_2439I wanted to prove the cynics and naysayers wrong.

IMG_2438I believed it was possible and doable to repair Mother Earth…at least a small part of her, whatever little piece I could afford to buy.

IMG_2434Now, thirteen years is a short time in the scheme of things and those who have looked at the before pictures are as amazed as I am at the speed, health and abundance of her recovery!

IMG_2436It is important to state here, for the record, that most people I knew, including friends and family, seen my quest as a form of madness that had taken hold of me in my post menopausal state!

IMG_2435During all of the thirteen years, as I wrote and photographed the unbelievable progress of this little bit of Mother Earth, I became aware that I was one of a small, but increasing band of strange people who had heard the call and got stuck in, doing, what seemed to others, a crazily mad thing!

IMG_2434I became used to the naysayers and the cynics.

IMG_2433I looked up occasionally from my ceaseless planting and sowing and saw people who talked the talk in fine measure, but stopped there!

IMG_2431

Almost from the beginning of posting this blog, I have been lucky to have had some quite remarkable people who have made donations that have kept my mortgage going during the worst of times…and I have always struggled to keep the bank on the other side of the gate.

IMG_2430You know who you are and I am eternally grateful for your love and support!

IMG_2429At this thirteen year junction, for it feels like a crossroads for sure, I have become increasingly aware of what lies ahead…and, as with my strong feelings to do what others scorned some thirteen years ago, I care little for what the response is to my words…they must be recorded!

IMG_2428The arrogance of man is shocking indeed!

IMG_2422To have been so certain in the face of their own destructive ways, that the greatest seed bank ever built and guaranteed to last for centuries, if not millennia, was brought to within a hair’s breath of destruction within a few short years of its completion, should be the wake-up call of wake-up calls!

IMG_2421Read the arrogance of certainty in this Time article…

IMG_2416Now, we all know what happened this year, don’t we?

IMG_2415The Doomsday Vault has not even survived its first ten years!

IMG_2414So this brings me to what I want to say…

IMG_2408Things are changing faster than anyone could have expected!

IMG_2406I have witnessed the longest drought ever this year here in the west of Ireland.

IMG_2395The water table dropped in early April, the driest in forty years and has not risen since, but continued to fall!

IMG_2392We are now entering a period of great change.

IMG_2390The Arrogance of Certainty seems ridiculous with hindsight, for nothing is certain anymore!

IMG_2386Man has chosen to try to outrun Nature in a feeble attempt to remain in charge!

Mother Earth has poured scorn on his attempts in what was arrogantly termed the Doomsday Vault!

IMG_2442I continue to sow and plant…one of many little Arks across the Earth…and plant out the little clocks that
“Beats out the little lives of men.” ~Alfred, Lord Tennyson

In Search of the Goddess Rising

poster spirit

A blessed day to you!

This morning is very special, for a series of events have come together to illuminate for me what I have to do next.

An email from a friend,

a dedication for my spring well in the Fairy Wood

and an image of a sacred megalithic grave not far from Bealtaine.

11695934_1624722274432570_241517419746791130_nI am, from this morning, in search of the Goddess in the landscape from Bealtaine to the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding countryside.

14445998_10154563619168267_8856636261920010690_nWhat began as a quest for Eden, thirteen years ago, has evolved into a quest to find the Goddess in all her secret wells, valleys, woods and mountain tops.

10411840_1629048047333326_5746226772228046363_nI have often wrote about her, dreamt of her and felt a need to help her rise from obscurity, for this land was the home of the Goddess before the importation of other belief systems.

In these dark days of violence and destruction, my love for Mother Earth has deepened as I watched her joyful re-emergence from this bereft land.

images (3)My task is complete here.

I will journey out from Bealtaine in search of the story of the Goddess, in search of understanding and, hopefully, of bringing together some of the connections between her and us.

IMG_2353To this end I am writing and photographing my next book as from today!

It will be published by the end of August.

If you would like to help me in this quest by purchasing an advance copy, which will be posted to you by the end of the first week in September, you can do so here.

Your support in this project is deeply appreciated…

Goddess Permaculture 39…Exposed!

IMG_1557

Thirty nine photographs of the Goddess at her best, as we rise towards Midsummer…a mere twenty four days away!IMG_1558

An abundance of fruit, flowers and vegetables, captured this morning on film, images from a small part of the three acres of Bealtaine Cottage, in the west of Ireland…all growing on this “poor” agricultural land.IMG_1559

I won’t take up too much of your time with words, for I would rather you simply enjoy the images, as I have done whilst drinking my morning coffee and walking the land.IMG_1560

Many thanks to Majella and Derek who brought me the beautiful little Oak saplings yesterday…that’s the pic at the top of this post!IMG_1561

Bealtaine Cottage…the Book!

Finally…on the home run as they say, working on the cover of my long-awaiting book,

“A Cottage and Three Acres”.

There’s a few bits on the cover (shown below), to be tweaked, such as the colour of the text and white stitching around the photo on the front (this is it laid out flat!)…but these are the tiny details. (See above for the final version, just updated!) The book will be printed in the next week or two, all going well!

The timeline should see books being posted off from Bealtaine Cottage by the middle to end of March. 14436-23-02-17-cover-a-cottage-and-three-acresNow that I have come this far, I feel confident enough to accept pre-orders!dsc06302

I am happy to inscribe your book and also happy to post it as a gift with a card attached. You can email me whatever message you want written on the card.dsc06296

I’m delighted to be able to include 71 colour photographs, although it has incurred a higher cost for me, but so many of you favoured the addition of colour photographs. dsc06298

Here’s the final book cover laid out flat…

Homemade Bread and Book Update

dsc06268

As promised, here’s the recipe for my easy to make/bake and life-sustaining bread…

For this recipe you’ll need a heavy cast iron saucepan and lid. I use a Le Creuset one, but any cast iron one is good!

I use the cup method of measurement since my daughter Cara bought me some stainless steel measuring cups for my birthday

dsc062672 cups organic wholemeal flour…spelt flour makes for a lighter bread!

2 cups organic white flour

2 cups mixed pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, linseed and poppy seeds. You can choose your own mix to taste!

1 & 1/2 tsps dried yeast

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp herb salt…any one will do.

1 tsp fresh finely chopped herbs…Rosemary or Thyme is good!

Mix well together, then add 2 & 1/3 cups of tepid water.

Using a big spatula, mix well for a few minutes.

dsc06264Now cover with cling film and set aside for 3-4 hours in your kitchen…room temperature is good enough!

dsc06263Pre-heat your oven to 450F and put your pan with lid in to heat.

dsc06262When hot, remove from oven, sprinkle a little flour into the bottom of the pan to prevent bread from sticking, pour in mixture, cover with lid and pop back in oven.

Bake for 30 mins.

Remove from oven, remove lid, then return to oven to bake for a further 15 mins.

dsc06261Remove loaf from pan and leave to cool.

Book Update…

The proof returned from the printers today, so I am busy reading and re-reading…

I expect the cover through in the next day or two. At that point I will feel confident enough to allow purchase of advance copies, knowing that the book will be off the presses and delivered to me by a certain date. I’m delighted with what I am reading and seeing so far. I’m happy also that I chose to go with printers here in Ireland, although this makes the book more expensive…the alternatives are not in keeping with what Bealtaine Cottage represents, works for and most importantly, cares for.

I hope to be back on this site with good news before the end of the week!

Blessings to you XXX

Food in the Midwinter Garden

dsc05676

It’s surprising just how much food is growing in the gardens of Bealtaine at this time of year, the time of scarcity…but far from it!

dsc05673dsc05672dsc05671There’s the makings of a decent salad, with Fennel, Japanese salads like Mizuna and others as well as a lovely edible garnish in the form of Pansy flowers.

dsc05670dsc05675In other parts of the gardens, where little micro-climates exist in the form of stones and shed walls, there’s Flat-leaf Parsley and Thyme.

I used Thyme in roasted potatoes yesterday…delicious!

dsc05664Purple Sprouting Broccoli is giving lots of florets…delicious raw or cooked and full of goodness! dsc05663Then there’s Leeks…all grown from saved seed and the stronger for it!

dsc05662Elsewhere in the gardens I found stands of Kale…shred this in salads and roast as chip dips!

dsc05669dsc05668Here and there in the flower beds and in pots…lots of Sage and Rosemary…great herbs to add taste to root vegetables at this time of year!

dsc05666Bay is growing in abundance, quite acclimatised to the Irish climate.

dsc05674Golden Oregano continues to thrive past Midwinter.

All of this is growing outdoors, not in the tunnel and these pics were snapped today, 26th of December!

dsc05651Even the Rhubarb is beginning to produce!

dsc05642There’s lots of other food in the garden…for birds and small mammals, in the form of berries.

Seeds are available from the link below…

Goddess Permaculture and what it looks like…

In between making soup and working in the gardens today, I’ve made this screen show for your enjoyment…

The Bealtaine Project is a full-time labour of love for Colette O’Neill, aiming to encourage and support those wishing to live more sustainably “with” rather than “on”” Mother Earth. To this end, Colette writes, photographs, films and podcasts regularly every day in multi media form.

If you enjoy all the stuff shared from Bealtaine Cottage here and on FaceBook, Youtube, Pinterest and Twitter…why not consider a small donation.

Goddess Permaculture…Here It Is!

dsc05099This is a morning in early winter, at Bealtaine Cottage in the west of Ireland.

dsc05100dsc05108On this Sunday, the twentieth day of November, I awoke to frost, clear skies and that bitter cold signalling immersion in Winter.

dsc05112Bealtaine Cottage didn’t always look like this…you can see how it once looked at the bottom of this page…

dsc05118Twelve years ago it looked quite different.

dsc05120The monoculture of meat production had brought the land low.

dsc05121Mother Earth was slowly dying.

dsc05122The air was silent.

dsc05123This morning you can see for yourself the beauty brought back to the land through Goddess Permaculture.

dsc05125What is Goddess Permaculture, I hear you ask?

dsc05130It is simply this…to recognise the Goddess in all life and honour her beauty and abundance, living as close to the Great Mother, Goddess Gaia, as one possibly can.

dsc05136To understand the Divine Feminine as the source of all life.

dsc05138dsc05142dsc05145dsc05151To honour the life force of Mother Earth.

dsc05152dsc05155dsc05174dsc05175dsc05176

To not just believe, but to understand that there is a way back to a beautiful Earth!

dsc05196dsc05199dsc05209dsc05217dsc05218dsc05222

You don’t need qualifications to restore Mother Earth…you need to open your heart and feel deep compassion for her loss…

Now we come to the end of this series of images taken this morning, you will find the images I snapped twelve years ago, when the Goddess lay buried deep within herself, hidden by patriarchal abuse and greed!
