The Great Collapse

Autumn permaculture at bealtainecottage.com 017

The great collapse of society, as we know it, is under way.

bealtainecottage.com 001

Most people are unaware of this.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (3)

Every aspect of controlled living is the same as ever it was.

Sammy-Bear says "Hello!"

The television keeps pumping out much of the same.

Supermarkets hum with shoppers.

Christmas lights flicker in shopping centres.

DSCF1237

The madness of more predominates a world in crisis.

DSCF1002

The populations of countries, channelled to look one way, as governments and the one percent carry on their relentless rendition of acquisition and destruction.

www.bealtainecottage.com

Look at how we live compared to a few decades ago…

There is no longer a mentality of saving for one’s heart’s desire.

All is instant, right down to the way we satisfy our hunger.

www.bealtainecottage.com

Hunger?

Merely a concept to most people in the western world.

www.bealtainecottage.com

I dare not say developed, for that implies evolved and the fact is, we are not in the least bit evolved!

We devour resources, as we revolve.

March 2014

Society is revolving on a mad merry-go-round of consumption.

Revolving, not evolving!

March 2014

We all know, in our mere moments of sanity, that this cannot go on.

Eco-systems around us are collapsing.

Species extinction is a runaway train-wreck.

www.bealtainecottage.com

Another Christmas looms, as people prepare to celebrate the birth of a baby with an orgy of consumerism!

www.bealtainecottage.com

We should take a bit more notice of that collapse and extinction, for anyone with common sense knows who’s next!

www.bealtainecottage.com

Future generations will look back upon this time and refer to it as the Great Collapse, much in the same way as we refer to the death of millions in The Great War.

www.bealtainecottage.com

And, as we all know, there was nothing great about it!

The Final Days

permaculture @ bealtainecottage.com 005

There was no intention to write today.

permaculture @ bealtainecottage.com 004

The fine days of an Indian Summer are bestowing harmony and peace to this little part of Ireland, but…

permaculture @ bealtainecottage.com (7)

an email arrived from a subscriber who articulated apprehension and fear, so a response is necessary.

28 June 2014 004

I don’t usually respond to emails, for there are many each day and I simply do not have the time, as you can understand.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (22)

However, this fear, presented to me from someone who is quite depressed by all that’s happening around the world, needs to be addressed once and for all!

www.bealtainecottage.com

These, are the final days of Empire…though not in any biblical sense!

cropped-img_0132.jpg

I am not about to be hounded into fear by any religious patriarchy.

What we are now experiencing will get worse…this has been proven historically!

The end of the Roman Empire was short and the prelude brutal!

Bread and circuses were the order of the day to keep people entertained and unquestioning.

Much the same is happening now, with the cult of celebrity, an overdosing of sport, cheap factory food and endless, mindless TV reality shows.

Our world is in the throes of bitter retreat, but it is merely the world created by man.

www.bealtainecottage.com

The real world is that of Mother Nature.

www.bealtainecottage.com

Now is the time to go to her, help her and find peace within her.

www.bealtainecottage.com

The final days of Empire are always chaotic…our own lives must be lived as best as possible…with kindness, care, compassion and as much joy as one can invoke!

For my part, I care not a fig for the end of this madness and brutality…things, as they say, can only get better…and they will…

While Rome Burns…

bealtainecottage.com 012

There are no solutions to the instability in the world that I care to offer, as my voice is irrelevant in the scheme of things that cause mayhem and war.

www.bealtainecottage.com 011

I can only offer advice on what works for me…on what keeps me sane in a world filled with lunacy!

bealtainecottage.com 010

Keep grounded!

bealtainecottage.com 007

Do what you have to do and do it well!

bealtainecottage.com 001

Look ahead into the seasons and make plans for planting, working, visiting and caring for the world around you.

bealtainecottage.cottage.com 006

Think about ways in which you can heal the world around you, be positive and nurture.

bealtainecottage.com 023

Don’t allow the mayhem to grind you down…life went on after the Fall of Rome, as well we know!

bealtainecottage.com 005

Remember, even as war, austerity and breakdown of society is happening right now in countries around the globe, people continue to look after their children, grow food, make food, wash clothes and generally get on with life as best they can.

bealtainecottage.com 018

For all the negative and dreadful news we are battered with on a daily basis, remember there are real people around you doing good things!

10 July 2014 005

The mainstream media rarely reports on good people.

permaculture @ bealtainecottage.com 014

The next time you share a conversation with someone, compliment them on a little thing to lift their spirits, for it will be paid forward, it will!

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (8)

I can say, with absolute certainty,  there are many more good people on this Earth than bad…and sometimes, those we perceive to be bad are just hurting.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (22)

The world is as beautiful, peaceful and abundant as each of us are prepared to make it!

Beyond Civilization

www.bealtainecottage.com

The light is changing.

As it does, a new growing season begins to unfold.

This is the year of change, as more and more people realize, that civilization, as we have come to know it in these past decades, holds little hope of holding together.

Willow basket making Feb Permaculture @ Bealtaine Cottage I do not say this lightly and the reasons I see for it are manifold, but the main contributors to the calamitous and increasing loss of habitat and stable environment on the planet, is civilization itself!

Jan 12 Bealtaine Cottage 005 Our civilization has created the perfect conditions for collapse of the very systems that sustain us.

Bealtaine Cottage FairyWe have watched the collapse of the financial world over the past few years.

There is no recovery!

Have you joined the endless queues in your local bank recently, just to be served?

Jan 12 Bealtaine Cottage 007Governments, like mine here in Ireland, are extracting carbon taxes from impoverished people and are not planting trees! Bealtaine Cottage PermacultureExtreme weather events are fast becoming an accepted part of our weather systems…have you noticed?

Shabby chic at Bealtaine CottageSo, as always with my writing, I move onto the positive, the can-do…and what comes to mind is a simple skills set, that we need to acquire, if we are to move beyond the last years of civilization as we know it.

Permaculture Cottage ...September 2011 005These are skills we need to acquire and pass on to younger members of our society…the ones who will be left adrift, without the security blanket we have used and abused.

May 2011 Bealtaine 040

  • Food growing
  • Healthcare…basic first aid! can you prevent someone from bleeding to death or help deliver a baby?
  • Craft skills…how to make and create from local resources.
  • Building and construction, as well as maintenance to keep a home dry, for example!
  • Cooking and baking…Home economics is so degraded now in general education, I wonder why?
  • Permaculture…encompasses all the skills listed here!
  • Fire-making…few young people know where to start and the basics!
  • Management of resources (NOT financial!)
  • Herbs and the vital role they play in good health, food and body-care.
  • Conflict resolution and society building without hierarchy.
  • Basic mechanics…look how people in poorer societies keep their cars on the road!

A Good Barter

www.bealtainecottage.com 003

The boys have lain on the sofa for much of the day, listening to music of one sort and another, as I have worked around them.

www.bealtainecottage.com 006The sewing machine in the Lodge has been clicking away, as I sort and sew material into pillow-cases.

It’s difficult to find good cotton pillow-cases, unless one is prepared to visit the city and a shop like Laura Ashley…in my dreams, methinks!

www.bealtainecottage.com 007Living on limited means, far from any city, just about means making it oneself!

I prefer to sew anyway, as the quality of items can be more easily regulated.

As the light of day fades into evening, other work comes into focus…

www.bealtainecottage.com 014Making sure there are plenty of logs in the baskets for the evening, along with tidying up the woodpile to make it safe from collapse!

www.bealtainecottage.com 025This is just one of several, that keep getting bigger, as my friend brings me more logs, in return for home-made wine!

www.bealtainecottage.com 012I took a walk around the upper gardens just as the light was fading.

www.bealtainecottage.com 018The leaves have almost finished their drop and cover the earth with such colour, that I have no intention of tidying them up…anywhere!

www.bealtainecottage.com 027Back indoors it’s time to switch on the main lamps and make a cosy nest for the evening.

www.bealtainecottage.com 030My little headless Venus is complete with her autumn face of berries, as the light fades into Midwinter darkness.

Financial Collapse…One Woman’s View on What to Do!

Growing Lettuce in a Hanging basket

Summer at Bealtaine Cottage.

The days are long and the simplest of good food is grown in easy ways…like this “Pick and Come Again,” lettuce in a slug-free hanging basket.

I have had lots of time to ponder the way of things in the world.

Growing strawberries in a hanging basketListening, reading and watching allows one to build up a picture of what is really happening.

The strawberries, meantime, can take care of themselves…another hanging basket crop!

Midsummer Day in the permaculture gardens of Bealtaine CottageI do not have television, so my head is not bombarded by trivial nonsense.

Preferring to spend time, especially summer-time, in the gardens allows me to think.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Garden at MidwinterUnderstanding that the economy is not collapsing, but, that it has been collapsing for quite some time now, is essential to developing a plan of action.

Since 2008 when the preliminary financial shock-wave hit, people have felt the slide into financial chaos.

Ensuring a small sum of money is kept aside, at all times, for emergencies, means one is  less vulnerable.

Home made wine in demijohnsBealtaine Cottage PermacultureGetting out of debt is essential too.

That noose around your neck will only keep tightening and there is no advantage in trying to keep up with one’s neighbours.

The likelihood is that they are deeper in debt than you!

Bealtaine Cottage bread binPay off your creditors in small regular amounts and keep one credit card…safe…at home!

Don’t go shopping with a credit card in your wallet…use cash only!

What if you are at rock bottom and have no money?

Bealtaine Cottage potager vegetable bedTurn your garden and especially your useless lawn into an edible paradise.

Tax free, organically grown, healthy food, growing as close to your home as possible, means more money in your pocket and better health!

Rent an allotment.

Bealtaine Cottage summer in the permaculture tunnelDo not rely on one source for your income.

Prepare for loss of regular income by becoming as diverse as is possible in terms of income.

For example, whatever you are good at can be turned into a micro business or even skill-swap scheme.

Bealtaine Cottage garden shedBe generous in all you do and with all you have.

Creating abundance and generosity around you will ensure the same will be returned.

Finally, let me just say this…

Bealtaine Cottage bicycle and valerianMuch of our financial despair comes from the lunatic assumption that we can throw things away.

Well, ponder on this…THERE IS NO AWAY!

Bealtaine Cottage lounger in the tunnelThere never has been an “away.”

We live on one very small planet.

What we do, we do to the planet and all it’s inhabitants.

There is no “away!”

There is only today and what we choose to do.

Preparing for the Collapse.

Spinning wheel and craft studio at Bealtaine Cottage Over recent months it has become more and more apparent that there is a massive problem rolling towards us in the financial markets.

Angel and Field Maple at Bealtaine CottageMaking money without production has been the mainstay of the economic markets.

Bealtaine Cottage February 2013The men in suits deal in commodities, pension plans, mortgages and hedge funds.

The standing stone at Bealtaine Cottage February 2013Money that is put into savings and pension plans is being scooped up and processed out of the country, to be invested in other, slave-labour nations of corruption and despotism.

The lower pond in the Bog Garden at Bealtaine Cottage in February 2013That money should be invested in our own economies, but, asking for integrity and honesty from the bankers and brokers is a useless and pointless exercise.

The Ash tree walk in the Bog Garden at Bealtaine Cottage February 2013So, it behoves us all to think and act in a prompt and practical way to avoid, as best we can, being a hapless victim in all of this.

The woodland that surrounds Bealtaine CottageMy advice is simple and easy to apply.

1.Grow food. Edible gardens, allotments, containers, patios and window ledges…great fun too!

2.Build a pantry and stock it well. This will cut down on multiple visits to the supermarket.

3.Learn as many practical skills and crafts as you can. Knitting, sewing, carpentry…everything is treasured that is hand made.

4.De-clutter your home. Let the energy flow freely around your living space.

5.Teach yourself to cook and bake. This is a real chance to improve your health and become powered up!

6.Collect together a library of knowledge and interest. The internet may never be as reliable as a solid book of information.

7.Invest in the most comfortable bed you can afford. You do, after all, spend one third of your precious life in bed!

8.Make your home cosy and draught-free. Your home is your haven, your sanctuary, your blessed space…be comfortable and warm in it.

9.Bulk-buy local when available. This will enable you to turn food gluts into storable feasts.

10.Invest in a chest freezer and put it in your new pantry…don’t forget, even a spare room will double as a pantry, especially a north facing one.
