The Goddess in the Well

DSC09880

Yesterday was a special day for me!

The beautiful, ethereal mountain that is Ben Bulben will give you a clue…

DSC09886I travelled to Sligo, passing along the shores of Lough Gill, to collect a very special ring, that was made for me by gifted Silversmith, Mirjam Schiller at

https://www.facebook.com/Wildheart-290973244286031/timeline

DSC09881DSC09882

My daughter, Cara, was driving, so we stopped by the shores of the Lough, made famous by W.B.Yeats in his poetry.

DSC09883DSC09884Birthdays come and go and I have enjoyed sixty of them, all in the month of October, near Samhain…so this, along with a second ring as yet unfinished, marked my sixty Summers on this precious, beautiful Earth.

DSC09885DSC09888I had deliberated for some time over what I should spend my birthday money on…have always loved silver and, very importantly, dearly wanted to place a much maligned symbol of the Goddess where I would always see it!

The story of the snakes being banished from Ireland represents a dark place in the history of this land…for it was the Goddess who was banned, to be replaced with an image dominated by Patriarchy… that of Virgin Mother Mary.13240026_1157744440942236_3639364493354802613_nThe Great Goddess often had snakes as her symbol—sometimes twining around her sacred staff, as in ancient Crete—and they were worshiped as guardians of her mysteries of birth and regeneration.

DSC09893Bealtaine Cottage encapsulates those two energies…birth and regeneration…of Mother Earth herself, in all her wild, unstoppable beauty.

DSC09889Wildheart was the place I had to go…

DSC09891DSC09890The journey back was auspicious, in that we got lost.

DSC09897And so, driving along a quiet road, we were led to an ancient Holy Well…much older than any religion…

DSC09898Tobernalt Holy Well is a place of reflection and nurturing serenity.

DSC09896It predates the advent of Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century.

DSC09895Its importance as a meeting place and a sustainer of life predates even our Celtic ancestors.

DSC09894Tobernalt is a natural spring well that established itself in a primeval forest.

It is situated at the South West corner of Lough Gill in the North Sligo Barony of Carbury.

DSC09899This was where I blessed my ring, submerging it in the Spring Water that flowed from the hill, away into the mystical depths of Lough Gill and the Lake Isle of Inishfree.

Wild Atlantic Way

IMG_8795

A visit to the wild Atlantic Ocean marks the day that’s in it!

The turning of another year for me, so close to the Celtic New Year, I can almost taste the wood-smoke in the air from Samhain bonfires.

The ocean is strong and volatile today, churning and heaving life, as it crashes on the stony shore of Strandhill in Sligo.

This is my birthday, the beginning of my sixth decade experience with Mother Earth.

IMG_8686

Visiting the Ocean is as close as I can get to her heart beat, rhythmic and strong…pounding out the pulse of life upon the shores of this most westerly habitation.

White horses ride the water as it breaks further out.

Children are on mid-term holiday from schools and line the promenade, with parents keeping watchful eye on the wild foam.

I look for a small stone upon the shore, one I can put into my pocket and hold easily in my hand as we venture home.

IMG_8771

I feel renewed, invigorated, and ready to leave the last decade behind me, as I embrace the first day of my future.

A Loaded Gun

“Western civilization is a loaded gun pointed at the head of this planet.”

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Feb 2011 022

I was shocked when I first read this quote!

www.bealtainecottage.com

However, it is not a statement I can debate, because, from where I am at this moment in time, I have to agree.

It is short and succinct!

It is true.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture

Returning recently from a shopping trip to Sligo, my head aching from the slow trawl around shops, keeping apace with other shoppers, most of whom seemed in a trance-like state, almost zombified; it struck me that many were there as a source of passive entertainment.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture

Shopping has become a pastime for many.

What does this say about our society?

Rhubarb Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Feb 2011 015

Is it merely that we are nothing more than consumers?

Let’s face it, our governments have long since created the global economic model upon that premise, that we are consumers of a vast global shopping mall.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture. Feb 2011 004

I live in the EU, where the government in Brussels are continually at odds with people, like myself, who demand a more democratic representation of our views.

Full Moon at Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture

Many of these disagreements focus around the EU contamination by big business and corporations which run inherently different policies to the representation of the people.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Feb 2011 025

Those I speak with, especially on the Bealtaine Cottage website, are sickened and angry with such things as the TTIP, Monsanto, agricultural policies and suchlike!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Feb 2011 012

For my part, I loathe guns and any analogies to them.

I do not want to be part of a loaded gun pointed at Mother Earth!

Bealtaine permaculture Feb 2011 003

Yet, we are governed in a way which is opposite to what we believe to be right!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture landscape

I was happy to get home from shopping.

My head was sore!

Bealtaine permaculture Feb 2011 001

All the over-wrapped, cheaply produced goods made me feel sick.

Plastic and chemicals that I knew my beautiful Mother Earth would have to deal with!

Bealtaine Cottage willow, beech and dogwoods

As the car turned into the entrance to Bealtaine, I heaved a sigh of relief.

Bealtaine Cottage Feb 2011 019

I imagine that feeling to be an integral part of what the land releases on a daily basis…

Bealtaine Cottage Feb 2011 007

I can’t change the system of corruption within government, but I am aware of its inexorable collapse…for this madness is not sustainable.

Bealtaine Cottage Feb 2011 013

We all know, like the Titanic, it’s going down.

And, like the Titanic, those on the bridge can neither see the disaster in front of them, nor believe their vessel to be so easily destroyed.

Transition Town Sligo, Monsanto and No 2 GM

March against Monsanto, Sligo

On Saturday, as part of the “March Against Monsanto,” campaign held worldwide, I attended a public meeting to raise awareness about Monsanto, and the many issues surrounding GM foods.

march against Monsanto, IrelandJohn Brennan,a long time anti-GM campaigner, and a member of NO 2 GM,an anti GM organisation, http://www.no2gm.com, was the speaker at this event.

As Monsanto, the giant biotech U.S. company is becoming more and more determined to impose it’s GM foods on the populations of the world, people are equally becoming more and more determined to resist this pressure.

Sligo has just entered the Transition Towns Movement and has already established a Community Garden, where great, organic food is grown and people come together to make the transition from a world of peak oil to a more localized environment, where food and fuel do not have to be transported great distances.

It was a great day and an opportunity to power up with information, as well as meet new people involved in improving the world we live in!

It was 25cents!

Doesn’t it make a great bird bath set into the branches of this tree and filled with rainwater?

As the tree grows this summer, the branches will grow into the plate, holding it securely in place!

Time to advertise what it is we stand for!

The power of advertising is immense.

Free advertising at Bealtaine CottageCorporations and governments allocate massive amounts of money each year to get their messages of suppression and control across to the public.

However, we have the access to advertising ourselves, if we decide to use our windows, cars, front doors, entrances to propagate our messages…what a load of free advertising space!

Bee on Linaria flower at Bealtaine CottageOn Saturday 25th May, there is a worldwide March Against Monsanto, taking place in all major cities.

If Monsanto is allowed to pimp it’s wares, as it does so successfully to central governments, then pictures such as this, the bee on Lunaria in the permaculture gardens of Bealtaine Cottage, will be rare indeed!

Here in Ireland, marches are taking place in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Clare…with more being added.

WE NEED EVERYONES HELP
WE ARE ASKING ALL ANTI GMO, ANTI MONSANTO, PRO NATURE, PRO HEALTH, PRO ENVIRONMENT, ANTI CHEMICAL POLLUTION, PRO ORGANIC, FACEBOOK PAGES WEBSITES, BLOGS, NEWS CHANNELS, AND NEWSPAPERS TO GET BEHIND THIS MOVEMENT. Living the Good Life

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture landscape

Some friends of mine called the other day.

They were off to Sligo to do their Christmas shopping.

The list of what they had to buy was long and detailed…three children and lots of family living close by!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture landscapeWhilst here, they collected Holly, Ivy, lots of other greenery, as well as a small Christmas tree, which they left down by the gate to collect later on.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture gardenBack inside the cottage, warming ourselves by the stove in the kitchen and drinking mugs of hot tea, they remarked on the similarity between my lifestyle and that of the television series, “The Good Life.”

Bealtaine Cottage permaculture kitchenI won’t expand too much on the series as you can always look it up on YouTube and have a laugh at my expense…

So, what exactly can be called a “good life?”

And here, we’re talking in terms of lifestyle choices, rather than anything too holy!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture kitchenI could draw up a list of all the things that make my life feel good, but, instead, I shall condense it all into one little word.

Simplicity.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture gardenFor the past few months I have been endeavouring to make my life as simple as possible, by giving away as much as I do not want…clothes, books, household items…and painting furniture to bring it all together.

The result is very satisfying…less stuff to move around, fall over, gather dust and fret about and, more simple elegance.

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture designDid you know that Coco Chanel built an empire on that very theme, Simple Elegance.

Her little black dress, well cut suit and No.5 perfume are still as popular as ever they were!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Cat...MissyLiving the “Good Life,” is not all about muck and wellies, no…it’s about lots of simple elegance too!

Ask Missy, she knows where to sit to look her best!

Pictures of a Frack Too Far in Ireland…Every Picture Tells a Fracking Story!

These photographs you are about to see were taken in the area of North West Ireland where prospecting for Gas was carried out in recent years.

The site was purchased by the company who test-drilled.

Local people remember what happened and have spoken to me about it.

In some photographs I am standing right on the site!

Look in wonder at the beauty. Download and save the pics…these may be some of the last taken of this extraordinary, breath-takingly beautiful landscape…

Jack, Bealtaine and the Ocean…Permaculture Musings from Ireland at Beltane

Drove to the ocean yesterday.

It was beautiful.

Took Jack and he loved it too!

Jack approves of the sea and the sand…he got really excited!

And he even found friends on the sand…

The setting sun has illuminated the trail in the dusk.

It is almost impossible to see the cottage!
