Companion Planting in Permaculture

Companion planting…

Bealtaine Cottage, Ireland

Pumpkin and kaleHere are some of the combinations that have worked really well for me this summer here at Bealtaine Cottage. Pumpkins, Kale and Nasturtium…the bees love the flowers on the Nasturtium, bringing them in towards the Pumpkin flowers.

Celery and RudbeckiaAnother strange but beautiful combination…Celery and Rudbeckia.

Rudbeckia is late flowering and especially useful in a potager bed, making lots of babies that can be potted on and sold at the market next Spring.

Parsley and SedumParsley and Sedum…Sedum is the last meal of the year for the bees and will ensure adequate nutrition for their long hibernation. This is the Sedum, Autumn Spectabalis, which makes lots of babies for potting up!

Tomatoes and FeverfewTomatoes, Feverfew, Borage and flat leaf Parsley…all very happy and thriving together in this potager bed. This is the way I grow all my fruit and vegetables…to the point where no soil is exposed. It works great every year!

The Magical and The Sacred

It is a rare thing…to be lost for words.

A day in Autumn that changes one perspective on life and the meaning of it all.

Where shall I begin?

Woodland at bealtainecottage.com 005

Perhaps where I started, this morning, camera in my dressing gown pocket and mug of hot coffee in my hand, traipsing out in rubber clogs onto grass saturated with morning dew.

Woodland at bealtainecottage.com 006

Or maybe, a little earlier, as this year began, immersed in deep sadness, as my mother made her own journey back to the Divine.

What magic lies in Nature that transforms barren into life again and again?

Woodland at bealtainecottage.com 019

The gardens have emerged this year as Woodland…and my mother loved walking in the woods.

Plundering the Future

Living lightly is not living without, but living with a care for our environment, our habitat and the children whose faces we will never see…

Bealtaine Cottage, Ireland

bealtainecottage.com permaculture

All our wealth comes from the natural world.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (3)Looking out upon the Midsummer Solstice morning makes me want to weep…for what are we doing to our beautiful planet?

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (2)This is a stark realization, in terms of how we relate to Mother Earth, for we can survive without most material goods, but cannot survive without good food and clean water.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (5)Much of what we eat and drink today is predicated on the use of massive amounts of chemicals…and all being pumped into, or spread upon, Mother Earth.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (6)We are not just soiling the nest, we are destroying the habitat around it.

Not even animals do this!

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (7)Somewhere in all of this are people with real concerns, who are aware of the dangers ahead; only some people though, as many are still unaware, or refusing to face reality.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture (10)The reality is, in my opinion, quite stark.

One only has to start looking at…

World Vision

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 004

Midsummer has arrived in her usual blaze of triumphant colour.

The longest day is here!

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 010

I have celebrated eleven Midsummers at Bealtaine Cottage and watched as the vibrancy of life has taken hold, year after year multiplying in abundance and vitality.

Not even I knew how it was to be!

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 013

This morning, as the sun rose in the East I ventured into the gardens to greet the day that rose above the trees.

It was truly magical to see and be a part of!

Walking down the driveway to the road below the gardens, it seemed that every small part of this once barren land was singing!

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 025

A once close held vision of an abundant and unbridled Mother Earth, has come to pass…

She breathes,

She sings,

She is allowed to be…

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 035

My joy is to share it with you…

that all this is possible…

for if it can manifest here in this once poor little place, then it is possible for all the Earth!

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 039

Almost one million views will have been registered here at bealtainecottage.com.

It is my wish that this message of renewal and resilience continues to spread across the world.

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 047

We are at a point in human history when all seems to be infested with despair.

It does not have to be this way.

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 048

It is our choice.

We choose death or we choose life.

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 067

We all know, intuitively, what is causing the cancer of despair.

The remedy is to be found around us, if we but open our eyes, unshackle our hearts and begin our work as healers, shamans, nurturers, carers, even warriors…for Mother Earth.

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 085

It cost me little but time and work to release Eden here at Bealtaine Cottage.

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 087

We can stand at the crossroads today, on this longest of days, and peer into our future.

Bealtaine Cottage before and after

It doesn’t have to be like this, as once Bealtaine Cottage was…

midsummer at bealtainecottage.com 091

Choose to be part of manifesting Eden…it’s in every choice we make!

The Most Sacred Thing

Those who welcome the Divine Mother into their gardens will understand this extraordinary energy.

Bealtaine Cottage, Ireland

DSCF1716Marija Gimbutas was a most extraordinary Archaeologist, perhaps the first archaeologist to look at how life was lived in the days before war!

DSCF1717Yes, it is amazing to think that such a world ever existed, but one needs to listen to some of the recordings of her work to understand the magnificence of this discovery.

DSCF1718What Marija has to say, in light of my ten years of experience here at Bealtaine, makes perfect sense to me!

I have added a link to some of her recordings and lectures at the end of this blog.

DSCF1719The work of Gimbutas may act as a template for the future…

DSCF1724There are revelations I have experienced here at Bealtaine Cottage, that I can only link to a strong female presence, describable only as an Earth Goddess or Earth Mother.

Bealtaine Cottage, Ireland

The photographer from Irish Country Magazine has just left…the magazine photo-shoot is over!
You can read all about Bealtaine Cottage in the Dec/Jan edition, which will be on the shelves at the end of November!

bealtainecottage.com permaculture 043

As we walked around the gardens, the conversation turned to the story of how Bealtaine emerged from rushy fields and it became apparent that this story becomes harder to tell…for it all seems so improbable.

bealtainecottage.com permaculture 070

The story has taken on myth-like qualities as visitors look around, finding it hard to believe that Nature could work such magic…but She has…the Great Creatrix!

permaculture @ bealtainecottage.com 001

The gardens are now a riot of autumnal colour, due in part to what many call ‘mistakes,’ but have turned out to be inspired tree planting, with nothing other than a gut feeling of where to plant and plant without discrimination.

When one considers it, Mother Nature does not discriminate.

She merely gets on…
