The Need To Be

www.bealtainecottage.comThere is a growing consciousness of need in humanity today.

The standing stone at Bealtaine Cottage February 2013There is an urgent need to be close to the Earth.

An early bee in April 2013 at bealtaine Cottage permaculture gardensMany of you feel this most powerfully.

April 2011 Earth Day at bealtaine cottage permaculture gardensMany of you are seeing the world for the first time…with eyes wide open, almost startled by the immense beauty of it all.

April 2011 Bealtaine 018The vibration of the planet is rising and has been doing so for several decades now.

April 2011 Bealtaine Cottage Laurel arch023With this rise in vibrational energy comes the Awakening of Humanity.

April 2011 bealtaine Cottage 033Do you feel the joy of being in Nature?

April Bealtaine Cottage 2011 013Invocation
Gaia,
you who cradle uranium and the rose
in your arms–
in this vast mysterious universe,
my very bones belong to you.

You witness my love affair
with the tall grass, wind, fox:
my senses–your holy communion.

I stand on your soil
in sunlight, starlight, moonlight,
rain, eclipse and earthquake,
offering a timeless prayer.

I walk in the spirit of you.
Earth. Mother, Ge.
I speak in your tongues.
I plant your seeds.

Attend my dreams.
Clarify my thoughts.
Inform my acts.
And every day at dawn,
seize my heart anew.

New Beginnings

www.bealtainecottage.com“She turned to the sunlight
    And shook her yellow head,
And whispered to her neighbour:
    “Winter is dead.”
― A.A. MilneWhen We Were Very Young

www.bealtainecottage.comAnd so the Spring is here, truly here.

The earlier light in the morning forces me awake.

www.bealtainecottage.comI have taken to painting, cleaning, bottling wine that has sat in demijohns all winter, patiently fining and clearing in a natural way.

www.bealtainecottage.comSheds have been tidied and barns cleared.

www.bealtainecottage.comCobwebs, (and there’s lots of them here at Bealtaine Cottage…I blame it on the wood-burning stoves!), corners and book-shelves have been brushed.

www.bealtainecottage.comMats taken outside and shaken, beaten and brushed!

www.bealtainecottage.comGarden paths are now tidy and edges turned in towards the beds.

www.bealtainecottage.comPotagers mulched…gosh, I’m feeling tired just writing about it all!

All the cutting and tidying has even revealed a very old Ganesh, here at the entrance to the Fairy wood.

www.bealtainecottage.comRose arches that have slumped over the course of the winter, have been tied in and supported.

www.bealtainecottage.comEven the tunnel is tidy, as the Nectarine tree makes a show of itself!

www.bealtainecottage.comThe hammock seat has been hung once more on the veranda.

www.bealtainecottage.comAn old bench is renewed with weather protection and placed in a new spot.

www.bealtainecottage.comFennel, along with other seedlings are growing strong and sturdy.

www.bealtainecottage.comThe bottom barge on the cottage has been painted as a weather protection.

www.bealtainecottage.comEnergy continues to rise…I hear it in the early morning with the birdsong, so beautiful and alive!

Building Resilience

www.bealtainecottage.comSoil is being depleted at a rate never before encountered on Mother Earth.

www.bealtainecottage.comPlants can only upload minerals from the soil and if they are absent from the soil, then the plants, that make up our fruit and vegetables will be nutritionally deficient!

About 10% of the land on the planet feeds the entire population.

www.bealtainecottage.comA 1992 Earth Summit Report stated that American soils, for example, are now 85% depleted of the essential minerals and elements conducive to growing healthy fruit and vegetables.

Considering the fact that this report was published over twenty years ago, the soil would  now be considered to be useless in terms of growing healthy food.

That leaves many people in a state of undernourishment.

www.bealtainecottage.comI suggest you look into this for yourselves, to understand the full extent of nutritional depletion in the food we buy.

Type the words : soil depletion, into your search engine and YouTube, to be surprised and shocked!

So what do we do about this problem?

www.bealtainecottage.comWell, here at Bealtaine Cottage, the answer I have implemented over the past ten years, has been to continually mulch and build up the soil, all over the three acres of Ireland of which I am guardian.

www.bealtainecottage.comThis method uses tons of biomass, which I grow on the land, shred, then compost or spread directly onto beds.

You can see the bed I covered in cardboard, compost and shreddings last autumn.

The light material is shredded willow on cardboard for access paths.

The beds themselves will be heaped up with even more compost before planting out!

www.bealtainecottage.comBiomass is carbon neutral and requires no shipping or transportation…it can be grown on site!

www.bealtainecottage.comBiomass is all biologically-produced matter based in carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, so even dredging the ponds of weed will provide nutritive mass for the soil!

This pile of clippings will be shredded to produce more biomass to be added to the soil, building up a nutrient rich, resilient land!

Subversion Without Violence

DSCF0783

Bill Mollison once said, “I teach self-reliance, the world’s most subversive practice. I teach people how to grow their own food, which is shockingly subversive. So, yes, it’s seditious. But it’s peaceful sedition.”

DSCF0789

Applying design to growing makes for good permaculture.

As Ireland endures a wetter and wetter climate, constructing vegetable beds on the top of gravel helps to counteract the worst elements of flooding.

DSCF0796The same design principles are applied in the polytunnel.

Beds are raised and paths are lowered, allowing for good drainage on this north facing slope.

DSCF0797This is a Nectarine tree, under-planted with Comfrey, which is then regularly chopped and dropped throughout the growing season, thus feeding the hungry fruit tree.

DSCF0798It has been planted in a central area in the tunnel so as to avoid cold drafts when doors are open.

DSCF0799This morning sees the blossom opening at just the right time, as bees are emerging from hibernation, so it’s essential to have both doors open to receive them.

DSCF0803Now this is something rarely seen, but this system works very well for me…seeds are sown together in one, big, deep, polystyrene, re-cycled box.

As seeds emerge and gain strength, I gently tease them out and pot them on, leaving space behind for the next swathe of emerging seedlings.DSCF0805Rhubarb fills out a Spring bed, with Raspberries coming along next in seasonal line!

DSCF0806

The Summer fruiting Rhubarb lies protected under this mound of straw…excluding light from emerging weeds.

DSCF0807The bed is mound shaped as every year sees more and more compost added.

DSCF0808And here’s the black gold…home made compost. As all of the gardens are on a north-facing slope, the tyres do not interfere with the quality of the compost, just protects the heap from the east and north weather systems…particularly cold!

DSCF0809Trees and bushes all play a part in the permaculture design, creating shelter and wind-breaks in this instance.

You can see one of the six bins used for compost toilet waste re-cycling tucked in on the right of the picture.

This makes great planting compost for trees!

DSCF0810More rain storms moving in from the west and Atlantic seaboard this morning, but the sun continues to shine!

DSCF0811As smoke curls up in wisps from the chimney, reminding me that a hot kettle awaits me indoors…tea!

DSCF0814I love the unpredictable Irish weather!

DSCF0813And the way everything greens up so quickly after the winter!

Have a good weekend everyone.

Approaching Equinox

March 2014

Mist and frost in the early mornings are a feature of March and the approaching Equinox.

March 2014

Buds have opened on the Ribes to reveal scented pink flowers that serve as an early breakfast for Bees making their way out of hibernation and in desperate search of a nectar shot or two!

March 2014Work has been ratcheted up a few notches, as the rain has ceased and everything, including the woodwork, has begun to dry out…time to paint fences and sheds with preservative!

March 2014This is the new blue fence, courtesy of three rather rusted looking tins of blue wood preservative I have had donated to me from a friend, who had them in her shed for quite a few years!

March 2014The colour of the sky on a clear day!

March 2014Daffodils have really come into their own this week, with splashes of yellow all over the gardens.

March 2014The flooded ponds remain delightfully brimming and filled with frogs spawn.

March 2014…a decoy duck, I have to add!

March 2014And a rarely seen view, looking past the Willow Fedge, into the undergrowth of trees.

March 2014May 2014 marks the tenth anniversary of Bealtaine Cottage, from rushy grass monoculture to this little Eden.

March 2014The gardens will be open for one day each month through Spring, Summer and Autumn this year…check out the link at the top of this page!

March 2014After painting this little bench with some of the preservative, I moved it…

March 2014…down to this newly cleared dry spot by a Great Western Cedar, planted eight years ago and now affording wonderful shelter in which to sit and enjoy the sun.

March 2014The last full moon before Equinox rises over Bealtaine.

Bealtaine Cottage permaculture March Another famine lurks around the corner, as monoculture food systems are the order of the day, financed and controlled by the EU bureaucrats, blinkered up to the eyeballs with bullshit!

This Could Change the World!

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 002Real Crisis in the Economy, Economic Forecasts, Economic Recovery, …the list of headlines, news and political in-fighting over the economy seems endless.

september 2011 bealtaine cottage 012However, the figures that are collected year on year, collated and spun out to us all, regarding the state of our country’s economy, are referred to as GDP or Gross Domestic Product.

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 009GDP is the market value of all officially recognized final goods and services produced within a country in a year.

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 016This includes trees.

Dead trees.

Only dead trees!

Trees that have been cut down and transported out of the country, or sold.

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage Bealtaine 005Now, imagine this…

May 2011 Bealtaine 005What if living trees were included in GDP?

May 2011 Bealtaine Cottage 039For, after all, a tree is of more value to us all, alive than dead!

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 008A tree is worth $193,250…

According to Professor T.M.Das of the University of Calcutta. A tree living for 50 years will generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, control soil erosion and increase soil fertility to the tune of $31,250, recycle $37,500 worth of water and provide a home for animals worth $31,250. This figure does not include the value of fruits, lumber or beauty derived from trees. Just another sensible reason to take care of our forests.

From Update Forestry Michigan State University

cropped-november-2011-018.jpgGDP is one the primary indicators used to gauge the health of a country’s economy.

It represents the total dollar value of all goods produced by that country

November 2011 018But, surely, the health of an economy is as much predicated on the health of it’s people, land, air and soil, as it is on exported dollar goods?

May blossom at Bealtaine CottageCan you begin to imagine how the inclusion of all living trees could change how we regard economic health, wealth, growth and progress?

May 2011 Bealtaine Cottage 018This small step could change the world!

The Memory of Eden

July permaculture 2011 010What is it that makes so many farmers and gardeners want to burn vegetative material?
The same happens here in Ireland, a country with the lowest tree cover in all of Europe!
This is essential for building soil, in fact is the only thing apart from erosion of rock, that actually gives us soil.
Permaculture Cottage July 2011 007Our connection to the soil is vital, for it gives us our food.
apple trees at Bealtaine Permaculture Cottage July 2011 011Those who fail to make that connection are doomed to starvation and loss of habitat.
July 2011 permaculture Cottage 004Loss of habitat means certain death.
Is this what is happening all over the Earth right now?
It appears to be so.
Disconnection!

July 2011 permaculture cottage 018Earth is not a thing we live upon, but Gaia, as described by James Lovelock.
July 2011 permaculture cottage 005Gaia is affected by everything we do, every breath we take, every loving or hateful action we do to her.
www.bealtainecottage.com 001The collective consciousness we inhabit is being infused by her cries…there are those who are evolved enough to hear and respond, and those who willfully lock themselves out from the trauma our planet is enduring.
September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 020The latter will have to watch their step for Mother earth is angry and will not abide!
September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 017I believe that we are each a part of the Divine Consciousness and dependent on every other living thing.
Permaculture Cottage ...September 2011 008I see this grasp of understanding, manifesting in so many people now, that it really lifts my heart!
There is a fusion happening.
October 2011 permaculture Cottage 010This fusion is bringing us all together with all life, every last atom of it!
May 2011 bealtaine cottage 002For those who embrace this, there is a sense of pure joy bestowed upon us by that Consciousness.
May 2011 Bealtaine 036For those who continue on the path of hate and spite, dominance and abuse, there can only be fear and a deep dark corner of a dying planet.
May 2011 Bealtaine 005The atoms we carry within us were once part of the Milky Way, of stars long since vanished back into the Divine Consciousness.
We carry Eden within us.
