Towards Midsummer

The days of Summer are upon us, bringing an abundance of flowers and insects, birds and bats, all adding to the chaotic show of colour, movement and sound.

Small trees and saplings put forth new growth bursting with colour and form…nothing is ordinary!

The cottage is shaded with climbing plants and trees, allowing the interior a beautiful coolness even on the hottest day.

Cotoneaster flowers and fruits as the bees flit from one tiny bloom to another…the birds will enjoy the fruits later in the year!

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” – Henry James

The fragile flowers of the Ground Elder shake their heads in the breeze, moving in a ghostly fashion in the late twilight.

“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”- L.M. Montgomery

  7. Dear Colette,
One day last week as I was watching your video of you walking through your gardens and talking about the wind, it inspired me to write this poem. I hope you like it.
    Wild Beauty
    The wakening leaves whisper…
sighing in silvery sounds and singing their primal music.
The wild air vibrates and shivers in the trees,
stroking and stirring the restless leaves, new and green, or aged and golden,
brushing and breaking branches, fully clothed, or naked in the winter’s chill,
bowing and bending the trunks of trees both ancient and new,
that creak and stretch, and sometimes fall.
The wild wind traverses the earth’s forests,
telling tales of long-ago centuries, faraway places,
singing songs both sad and sublime,
spilling the secrets of our ancestors, stories that are never lost.

  8. Colette, your photographs are magnificent! My own half acre is abloom with flowers, birds, saplings and “volunteers” from several shrubs, trees and herbs. Isn’t it a sight to behold? Mother Earth blesses us for our hard work and our loving care of the land. Your three acres are a paradise, to be sure. I planted a sugar maple I grew from a sapling and a pecan tree I grew from a pecan I collected at a pecan farm. Have several more in the freezer. Oh my the squirrels will go “nuts” when the trees I plant begin to fruit, lol. Blessings to you and Jack. Love your Bealtaine Cottage and three acres❣️Joanna
