Giordano Bruno

DSC01473

I have been reading much of late…in particular, two books by James Lovelock, setting out the case for Gaia and the ensuing extreme weather generated by a change in our climate, among other things, some would argue!

DSC01461

DSC01462This is not a blog about Climate Change or, even, extreme weather…enduring it is quite enough!

DSC01467This is about an extraordinary human being, who, 400 years before James Lovelock, set out the case for our Earth being alive…as I know her to be today!

DSC01464For this and other beliefs, Giordano was burned at the stake in the year 1600.

DSC01471Giordano Bruno, born Filippo Bruno, was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, mathematician, poet, and astrologer.

DSC01472He is remembered for his cosmological theories, which conceptually extended the then novel Copernican model.

DSC01470He proposed that the stars were just distant suns surrounded by their own exoplanets and raised the possibility that these planets could even foster life of their own (a philosophical position known as cosmic pluralism).

DSC01469He also insisted that the universe is in fact infinite and could have no celestial body at its “centre”.

DSC01463Beginning in 1593, Bruno was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on charges including denial of several core Catholic doctrines (including Eternal Damnation, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the virginity of Mary, and Transubstantiation).

DSC01460So, you can begin to see why I have warmed to this rather extraordinary and brave human being!

DSC01458Not, as some would imagine, for having strong views…but for daring to question!

DSC01457Bruno’s pantheism was also a matter of grave concern.

DSC01456 The Inquisition found him guilty, and he was burned at the stake in Rome’s Campo de’ Fiori in 1600.

DSC01452In short, Giordano Bruno was burnt at the stake just over 400 years ago for maintaining that the Earth was alive!

DSC01449After many years of isolation in the science community, James Lovelock was acknowledged as the bearer of truth, sometimes a painful burden to carry in a society fixated with staying well inside the box!

DSC01447I know from my intimate work with Mother Earth, that she is indeed alive.

I open myself to her communication.

DSC01439Her voice grows louder with each passing day…indeed, many of you hear or feel her communication.

DSC01432The change in acceptance of James Lovelock’s Gaia theory was summed up in a declaration published by scientists from the four international research programmes in 2001 which said…

DSC01428“The Earth system behaves as a single, self-regulating system, comprised of physical, chemical, biological and human components. The interactions and feedbacks between the component parts are complex and exhibit multi-scale temporal and spatial variability.” DSC01426We need to make peace with Her…and to do that we need to listen!

Like Children

DSC00479For the 99 percent of the time we’ve been on Earth, we were hunter and gatherers, our lives dependent on knowing the fine, small details of our world.  Deep inside, we still have a longing to be reconnected with the nature that shaped our imagination, our language, our song and dance, our sense of the divine.

Janine M. Benyus

DSC00480As an integral part of the global awakening that is happening, humankind are being called back to the earth, to reconnect with Gaia.

DSC00478Not everyone is feeling this at the same time…as each one of us on our own sacred journey comes to experience in own time.

DSC00477This morning, awakening around six thirty, I ventured out into the gardens to experience the early morning mist, which, as I type at almost 11am, prevails.

DSC00475 Ireland has been experiencing some incredibly good weather in recent weeks and so it goes on.

DSC00474In other parts of the world, devastating storms have wreaked havoc!

DSC00473Yet, in all of this uncertainty and upset, the advance of those seeking to connect with Mother Earth increases.

DSC00472We are like lost children in need of the comfort of a parent.

DSC00471 And perhaps this is a good thing, for to be like children on this Sacred Earth will connect us much easier than any other way.

DSC00470So what is it about children that gives them the advantage in understanding their place in the Universe?

DSC00468Could it be that they are naturally curious?

Is it our loss that we accept so much and question so little?

DSC00465Have we allowed our lives to become subsumed in the detritus of the material world?

DSC00463I often pass gardens where all is so perfectly straight and neat that I actively squint in attempting to see Mother Nature…and often I do not see Her at all!

DSC00462 Yet I know that control of Nature brings unhappiness and discontent…the sort of feeling where frustration begins to eat at one’s very soul!

DSC00461So what are the tools we need to enable us to reconnect with Mother Earth.

DSC00460 I have the privilege to be able to observe small children when they visit Bealtaine with their parents and it is nothing less than a joy to behold!

DSC00417They hold the keys to the kingdom!

DSC00415What a joy it is to feel the soft, springy earth under my feet once more,
to follow grassy roads that lead to ferny brooks
where I can bathe my fingers in a cataract of rippling notes,
or to clamber over a stone wall into green fields that
tumble and roll and climb in riotous gladness!

Follow Your Bliss and the Universe Will Open Doors

Looking out on a May evening…

Making a decision is always the most difficult part of moving forward.

DSCF1379In deciding, one simply puts it out there, for the Universe to pick up.

DSCF1382That is what I have done here at Bealtaine Cottage…the next move comes from that energy.

Sammy-Bear takes a seat...

The sale may, or may not happen…but the planting of trees will move forward.

I have done what was asked of me and agreed to the sacrifice.

What happens next is synchronicity and the will of Divine Energy…The Forest of Bealtaine will happen in the same magical way as Eden emerged here at Bealtaine Cottage.

Food is poured in to the top of the pipe and emerges from the feeder at the bottom as the hen peck!

Happy Bealtaine, the 1st Day of Summer in the Celtic Calendar.

Summer dawn at Bealtaine Cottage IrelandThe Celtic Festival of Bealtaine, also spelt as Beltane, Beltain, Beltainne and Beltaine is a Cross Quarter Day.

Midsummer Magic at Bealtaine CottageThis means,  that it is half way between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice.

This year, 2013, the date when the cross-quarter day falls is May 5th.

The Great Turning

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture, Lush AbundanceWe are at a transformational moment in human history.

This is the Great Turning.

This is a whole mindset of understanding that we are part of a living planet.

Rosehips at bealtaine Cottage permaculture In contrast to the Industrial Revolution, we are understanding that the sustainability of the Earth has been brought to the brink of utter destruction by our mindless greed.

Bealtaine Cottage December Permaculture pondWe need new ways of living and holding the land intact for future generations.

These ways must become deeply rooted in our newly acquired belief systems.

The primary belief being that we understand who we are in time.

That we are part of the Earth, and the Universe.

That we are one.

November Bealtaine Cottage permaculture pondFor the past eleven years, the transformation of one small part of the Earth, from impoverished land to living abundance, has taken place here at Bealtaine Cottage.

Missy at Bealtaine CottageAll who have made the journey here have been impacted by the energy that is spiralling from the land.

During this time I have changed the way I see life.

Bealtaine Cottage moon rising over the permaculture gardensEntrenched belief systems have been shriven, in much the same way as the albatross was finally released from around the neck of the Ancient Mariner.

Bealtaine Cottage permaculture gardensWhat began as an experiment with permaculture, has become a journey of joy and synchronicity.

Bealtaine Cottage Nov 2011 024Synchronicity is a form of coincidence powerful enough to shatter the notion that material science has discovered all there is to know about the universe.

Bealtaine Cottage permaculture gardensIt was the power of synchronicity to overwhelm the rational mind that held significance for the Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung (1875-1961),  who brought the phenomenon to light.

April 2011 bealtaine Cottage 001Jung defined synchronicity,   as meaningful coincidence, effecting the breaking through the “rationalistic shell” of the modern scientific mind.

Plum tree at bealtaine cottage permacultureThe experience of synchronicity is articulated by many rational and educated people, who become aware that there is more at play in this world than what science can explain.

As We Awaken…

The weekend lies ahead.

My Connemara visitors have left…sad to wave off such great folks!

Missy and Che are both fed and pampered.

The Tea cups are washed and stacked on the draining board and the last of the muffins packed away into the freezer…for if not I would surely eat them…well, I may share them with Jack and Flo!

Missy appears to be more tolerant of Che, for today at least…he may be taking his life in his hands by getting this close tomorrow!

We talked and talked about such interesting things…it’s a pleasure to share time with like-minded folk!

By understanding the Universe as a vast, holistic system and our Earth as a part of that complex and unified system, we can start to bring about the restoration of the natural ecosystems that hold it all in place.

This is why so many visitors are drawn to what is happening here at Bealtaine…the restoring of the ecosystem  on three acres can be mirrored anywhere.

To begin, it is essential to honour and trust Nature…that is what I have learned at Bealtaine Cottage.

For once we let go of the urge to control and dominate Nature, we become open to understanding creation itself.

We simply do not yet have the words to articulate this wonder.

We have been constrained in all aspects of our living for so very long…

Terri brought me big generous bags of wholefoods from her shop in Connemara…I feel utterly spoilt!

I may visit Connemara to give a talk on Permaculture…thank you both for the invitation!

As we stood together in the garden nearest the cottage, we spotted a Butterfly…I hope this is a good omen of lots more to come!

We live in such strange times.

I feel blessed to be here, at this time, for so much has been revealed.

More and more people are becoming conscious, as though they have awoken from a very deep slumber.

We live in interesting times, we live in dangerous times, but most of all, we live.

Today, I was reminded of that.

Life is good.

A Sense of Purpose

This is a month of many visitors to Bealtaine.

It is also the month of midsummer.

The ascent towards the solstice is happening.

It is actually visible in the growth all around me at Bealtaine Cottage.

Grass has grown tall and is seeding.

Nettles are almost past their prime, for once the flower heads appear their culinary use is forbidden.

Blossoms are ready to harvest, especially the Elderflower, one of the most delicate and exquisite flowers to use for making cordial, jam and champagne.

Elderflower cordial, once made and safely bottled, will keep easily for a year or more…not that I have ever kept it that long!

It is one of the best tastes of summer, if not the best!

Many of the visitors to Bealtaine Cottage are as interested in the spiritual aspects of permaculture, as the practical aspects of embracing permaculture as a lifestyle choice.

I see both as intertwined, for as permaculture is practised, spiritual awareness deepens and religious thinking diminishes.

A transformation occurs that takes the participant to a higher plain of awareness and understanding.

For me, permaculture has led me quite naturally to a life of simplicity and increasing awareness of the natural world.

It has been a tuning in process that has reached a level of comfortable ordinariness.

In other words, I get it… I feel comfortable within the universe.

There is incredible peace of mind in a permaculture lifestyle.

Most of the time, the brain is in an alpha state, with virtually no anxiety.

There is little to be anxious about, as this lifestyle choice both empowers and disregards.

With little need for money, the desire to consume is abated and diminished.

The consuming society is fast consuming itself and mostly for greed, ego or other negative reasons.

So much of the negativity which once dominated thinking, is disregarded, thrown off.

Life is embraced as a series of sunrises and sunsets and all the day in between, noticing the natural environment, planting, harvesting and simply being.

Many who are unemployed can turn to permaculture as an unlimited resource, fractionalised only by one’s own imagination.

A sense of purpose is easily attained by working close to the Earth.

Here at Bealtaine Cottage, as the night draws in and the rain scatters nourishment upon the plants, I take a final walk around the cottage before reluctantly going in for the night…
