Early Lughnasadh in the Gardens of Bealtaine

The last flush of Summer happens in early Lughnasadh.

IMG_3049As I walk the gardens in late evening, the earthy taste of Autumn pervades the air.

IMG_3052The wheel turns as endings and beginnings wind their way through the days of change.

All is change…

Mists form in early morning cool air as heat continues to rise from the earth.

Soon the clothes of summer will be packed away, to be replaced with woollens and woven items more suited to the cooling of Lughnasadh.

In the world of man the destruction and threats of destruction continues, as though in another dimension. Mother Earth is unaware of their arrogance and hubris…She just goes on, as they huff and puff and eventually blow themselves out…She just goes on!

The tiny error in the spelling of Ballyfermoyle has been corrected, (not shown on here), and I’m hoping to pick the 200 copies towards the end of next week.19748463_1072901282809391_6230458109830596244_n (1)

This map has been painstakingly drawn with fine detail and creativity by the artist and cartographer, David Gascoingne.

David Gascoigne Thanks for a wonderful day yesterday Colette, great connections made and great work done. And thanks once again for the opportunity & for supporting & encouraging me, I am still buzzing today & I have started on the series of Magic Animal Goddess Cards already .. Raven on the way first . ! I will put progress/updates on my David Gascoigne Art page 🙂 It’s a pleasure & honour to know you Mrs, what you’ve achieved at Bealtaine is nothing short of mind-blowing,..you certainly walk the walk well and are a genuine inspiration, Blessed Be, and more of this kind of thing

From a little cutting you have dug your roots deep down into Mother Earth and she has sustained you as your tendrils reached out and climbed ever upward toward the sun.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw your first fruits as they formed their first tiny bunch.

The tiny Sedums that played dead for so long have flowered in the rain and sun.

Flowers appear and seeds follow as Mother Earth gives, gives, gives!

What man has pronounced to be barren has defied all Science and understanding. Arrogance cannot define her, this great mystery that is the Great Mother!

Those who deny the spirit of Mother Earth are doomed to a life less lived.

There are many sad and disconnected souls whose voids are partially sated with all the material world has to sell…yet still they feel the emptiness of loss and disconnect, from a force they mostly do not understand.

The day begins at 10:30 and finishes at 5pm.

Includes Morning /Afternoon tea and Vegan cakes, as well as a full Vegetarian/Vegan lunch.

Cost: 75 euros

Morning

The first week of July and there’s a feint scent of Autumn in the air this morning.

The morning brings a quiet and gentle beginning to the day, untouched by the continuing perplexities of man.

IMG_2384IMG_2385“Man has drawn artificial lines on the chest of the Mother Earth, which have no significance, except for the sake of war and clashes between countries. In Search of the Goddess Rising

poster spirit

A blessed day to you!

This morning is very special, for a series of events have come together to illuminate for me what I have to do next.

An email from a friend,

a dedication for my spring well in the Fairy Wood

and an image of a sacred megalithic grave not far from Bealtaine.

11695934_1624722274432570_241517419746791130_nI am, from this morning, in search of the Goddess in the landscape from Bealtaine to the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding countryside.

14445998_10154563619168267_8856636261920010690_nWhat began as a quest for Eden, thirteen years ago, has evolved into a quest to find the Goddess in all her secret wells, valleys, woods and mountain tops.

10411840_1629048047333326_5746226772228046363_nI have often wrote about her, dreamt of her and felt a need to help her rise from obscurity, for this land was the home of the Goddess before the importation of other belief systems.

In these dark days of violence and destruction, my love for Mother Earth has deepened as I watched her joyful re-emergence from this bereft land.

images (3)My task is complete here.

I will journey out from Bealtaine in search of the story of the Goddess, in search of understanding and, hopefully, of bringing together some of the connections between her and us.

IMG_2353To this end I am writing and photographing my next book as from today!

It will be published by the end of August.

If you would like to help me in this quest by purchasing an advance copy, which will be posted to you by the end of the first week in September, you can do so here.

Your support in this project is deeply appreciated…

Infinite Healing Workshop

IMG_2028

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
~ Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

IMG_2029

As more reports enter the public domain about the decline of flora and fauna in the natural world, the abundance and sounds at Bealtaine Cottage seems to soar.

IMG_2030Those who attended yesterday’s workshop attested to this simple fact, as they explored the paths and gardens that link, one to another, in a seemingly endless journey through Nature.

IMG_2031Rachel Carson wrote this over fifty years ago…

“We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost‘s familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been travelling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road — the one less travelled by — offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth.”
~ Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

IMG_2032I am on the road less travelled.

IMG_2033Something of a hermit in a world besieged by those who are driven by acquisition and spiralling discontent.

IMG_2035Bealtaine Cottage now exists as a Ark for Nature. IMG_2034That which has brought humanity to this point of peril, exists outside of Bealtaine.

IMG_2036I continue to tend and stand guard on what, to me, represents the sacred, while churches, temples and shrines gather people to them, looking ever skyward for the meaning of life…yet life clings around their feet, plundered and stamped to dust.

IMG_2037And so I continue on the road less travelled…happy and blessed to be so.

IMG_2040

I will be hosting another workshop on Saturday, July 1st.

Permaculture Fruit Garden

DSC06798

Lots of planting today before the Spring begins to merge into Summer, as often it does! Working in the fruit gardens by the Lughnasadh Garden is a joy as it affords me an opportunity to cast glances across at the new garden from quite different angles!

DSC06802Last year i grew lots of Blackcurrants from seed saved right here at Bealtaine.

I gave away many of these sturdy plants and so decided to plant the excess here in the new garden.

As you can see I am planting directly on top of the mulched area of cardboard and straw.

DSC06800I used compoost from the bins to give them the very best feed for the coming growing year. This is two years old and sweet smelling compoost.

DSC06801I also planted a Mulberry tree in the corner.

DSC06799Near the bottom of the path was planted the other Crab Apple.

Bees should certainly enjoy these new gardens!

I shall cardboard and straw mulch the area around this tree in the coming days so as to suppress all weeds.

DSC06803I added a shallow dish to the Lughnasadh Garden so Bees and Butterflies may drink water without drowning…it is such a sad sight to witness! The area to the right is simply cardboard and chippings from the garden shredder.

DSC06797

Elsewhere in the garden I have moved this home made wood shelter into place to store all the cut willow for use next winter.

DSC06816This gives a fantastic heat and is great for baking when I need higher temperatures in the stove.

DSC06812

This gives an over view of what I’ve done so far.

(Oops, there appears to be a rain drop on the lens!)

DSC06806

The tunnel is fast becoming my favourite place…I will set up a rocket stove nearby for making tea!

Mother

“I was elected by the women of Ireland, who instead of rocking the cradle, rocked the system.”

~ Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland

DSC06675

Walking through the upper gardens this morning and snapping photographs as I went…

DSC06686As I walked I thought about my Mother, my Grandmother and some of the women who have influenced my life, as Mother’s Day approaches…

DSC06687Mary Robinson, the first woman President of Ireland was certainly one of those women!

DSC06694“The Irish presidential election of 1990 was the tenth held in Ireland and the first to include a female candidate. Independent politician Mary Robinson would go on to hold office for the next seven years. In the 1990 election, the Labour Party let it be known that it would run a candidate for the first time and nominated Robinson, a former Labour Party senator, and liberal campaigner. The renegade had been involved in the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform and is widely regarded and respected as atransformative figure in Ireland for liberalizing and revitalizing what was a conservative and low-profile political office. She was a remarkably popular president.” ~ http://www.irishcentral.com

DSC06681

And so the transformation of Ireland and Irish politics began.

The patriarchal system of state and church had been given a bit of a shake down, but the real change began as we all began to feel more confident about questioning the world in which we lived.

DSC06672My own questions formed around the environment in which I lived, most importantly the Earth and our relationship with her.

I dreamed about returning to Ireland and challenging the status quo of land stewardship. Was it possible to do the seemingly impossible and recreate the Ireland of my deepest dreams?

A land of trees and woodlands, abundant wildlife, flowers and rich, seasonal colour?

A land of abundant food and shelter?

A land dedicated to the Great Mother…Earth?

Moreover, to even attempt to do this on some of the poorest land in Ireland?

DSC06682I felt empowered by Mary Robinson, as many women at home and abroad felt and continue to feel empowered.

DSC06683The opportunity to fulfil my dream came over a decade later, when, throwing all caution to the wind, I embarked on what was to become known as the Bealtaine Project.

DSC06685The book, “A Cottage and Three Acres,” picks up the story…

As I worked, sometimes into the night, planting and tending a hopeless looking land, I felt continual waves of compassion for Mother Earth.

I coaxed her, talked to her and sometimes even sang to her, the way one does with a seriously ill patient whose doctors have all but given up hope.

DSC06695I was not the only one though, for many, many others were embarking on a similar path all across Earth.

DSC06698I spoke with all who visited Bealtaine Cottage about Mother Earth, when few people seemed to recognise her plight.

But, something very incredible was happening…

DSC06699There was a distinct sense of energy rising from the very Earth herself…a form of communication at the most deeply intuitive level.

DSC06708 After years of feeling outcast because of what I sensed and felt, there happened a mighty shift in perception.

DSC06714As I began to write and photograph what was happening at Bealtaine, so many of you tuned in…often in the most serendipitous of ways!

DSC06715But, it was not accidental, for all is connected and often in ways we do not understand.

DSC06717And so the website began reaching  people all over the world.

DSC06718What began as an impossible dream, became a reality of hope for many…that nothing is impossible!

DSC06723That the doors of perception are not locked and barred!

DSC06724We are all, each and every one of us on an incredible journey, each one unique, yet deeply connected to all and everything.

We may live alone, but we are never alone.

DSC06730We are beautiful souls experiencing a human journey with the greatest Mother of them all…our own Mother Earth.

Happy Mother’s Day!

A Cottage and Three Acres by Colette O’Neill

Book Launch at Bealtaine Cottage

DSC06636

The long awaited day has arrived!

DSC06634I received a delivery from my printers in Dublin, of my book, “A Cottage And Three Acres”. DSC06635It is three years since I put the first chapter on the website and waited for feedback from you, dear supporters of what has become the Bealtaine Project.

DSC06637I recall being  both surprised and elated at the positive response to my writing and your encouragement to continue writing the book.

DSC06638I decided to follow permaculture ethics and have the book printed here in Ireland.

DSC06639I also decided to post the book from Bealtaine Cottage, making full use of my local Post Office which, like many rural Post Offices here in the west of Ireland, is under threat of closure!

DSC06640This way, all the benefits of my effort, go to support rural Ireland, a place I love and care for!

DSC06641One’s decisions in life have rippling effects on all one cares for…and evident that Permaculture can make a difference…

DSC06666

The book is being posted out from my local post Office here in the west of Ireland, as a most practical way of trying to keep my rural Post Office open…for the government has threatened closure on many! This is Pascal McKenna who runs my local Post Office in nearby Drumshanbo.

DSC06665

The books are packed here at Bealtaine Cottage…I have employed a friend to oversee this, who comes in each morning. As you can see, there’s a lot of work underway here!

DSC06642The cost of the book is 21.00 euros, plus 5.50 P&P for addresses in Ireland, 6.50 P&P the rest of the world.

Bealtaine Cottage…the Book!

Finally…on the home run as they say, working on the cover of my long-awaiting book,

“A Cottage and Three Acres”.

There’s a few bits on the cover (shown below), to be tweaked, such as the colour of the text and white stitching around the photo on the front (this is it laid out flat!)…but these are the tiny details. (See above for the final version, just updated!) The book will be printed in the next week or two, all going well!

14436-23-02-17-cover-a-cottage-and-three-acres

The timeline should see books being posted off from Bealtaine Cottage by the middle to end of March. 14436-23-02-17-cover-a-cottage-and-three-acresNow that I have come this far, I feel confident enough to accept pre-orders!dsc06302

I am happy to inscribe your book and also happy to post it as a gift with a card attached. You can email me whatever message you want written on the card.dsc06296

I’m delighted to be able to include 71 colour photographs, although it has incurred a higher cost for me, but so many of you favoured the addition of colour photographs. dsc06298

Homemade Bread and Book Update

dsc06268

As promised, here’s the recipe for my easy to make/bake and life-sustaining bread…

For this recipe you’ll need a heavy cast iron saucepan and lid. I use a Le Creuset one, but any cast iron one is good!

I use the cup method of measurement since my daughter Cara bought me some stainless steel measuring cups for my birthday

dsc062672 cups organic wholemeal flour…spelt flour makes for a lighter bread!

2 cups organic white flour

2 cups mixed pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, linseed and poppy seeds. You can choose your own mix to taste!

1 & 1/2 tsps dried yeast

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp herb salt…any one will do.

1 tsp fresh finely chopped herbs…Rosemary or Thyme is good!

Mix well together, then add 2 & 1/3 cups of tepid water.

Using a big spatula, mix well for a few minutes.

dsc06264Now cover with cling film and set aside for 3-4 hours in your kitchen…room temperature is good enough!

dsc06263Pre-heat your oven to 450F and put your pan with lid in to heat.

dsc06262When hot, remove from oven, sprinkle a little flour into the bottom of the pan to prevent bread from sticking, pour in mixture, cover with lid and pop back in oven.

Bake for 30 mins.

Remove from oven, remove lid, then return to oven to bake for a further 15 mins.

dsc06261Remove loaf from pan and leave to cool.

Book Update…

The proof returned from the printers today, so I am busy reading and re-reading…

I expect the cover through in the next day or two. At that point I will feel confident enough to allow purchase of advance copies, knowing that the book will be off the presses and delivered to me by a certain date. I’m delighted with what I am reading and seeing so far. I’m happy also that I chose to go with printers here in Ireland, although this makes the book more expensive…the alternatives are not in keeping with what Bealtaine Cottage represents, works for and most importantly, cares for.

I hope to be back on this site with good news before the end of the week!

Blessings to you XXX

Each year, more and more visitors come to see the emerging gardens of Bealtaine.

The trees are fast turning the gardens into young woodland, as the land returns to fertility and beauty.

Today was a lovely day when we all walked the land and stood in awe of the power of Mother Earth bedecked in her finest gown of the year…that of early Autumn.
