IMG_8473The evening has drawn in without my noticing, a sure sign of Autumn quickening towards Samhain.

IMG_8474I have walked the woodland gardens this evening and made a video.

IMG_8471It’s so much easier to upload videos with my new laptop now that both phone and laptop are compatible.

IMG_8460I have missed the regular writing I do here on the website and was pondering on what to do in order to make the time for this?

IMG_8457This website was my very first and enduring foray into the world outside of Bealtaine Cottage.

IMG_8456I have decided to make this website a priority above FaceBook and Twitter…those who want to will find and subscribe here.

IMG_8452I may even get back to a daily journal of sorts…we shall see!

IMG_8454There are stories to be told and pictures to share…

IMG_8447

You may have noticed the change of title at the top of the website…this is because Bealtaine has evolved and is very determined to be a woodland…She was always wilful!

Day 52 of WFPB Lifestyle

20

It’s almost two months since the end of my 100 day juice fast.

39157771_2100355956869197_4455638805612855296_n (1)For all of my life before I have dieted, lost weight and then, in the space of a month or two, put it all back on again!

37708540_2080122518892541_8529791013902876672_n

I’m sure that if you have ever suffered with weight issues, you completely get what I’m talking about here!

36993235_2067897756781684_5944549739155423232_nThis time, after losing a massive amount of weight over the course of 100 days, something amazing has happened…I have not gained a single pound back over the past 52 days of eating!

Not only that, but, I have continued to lose weight, albeit slowly, but nevertheless lose it and feel better and better in myself!

I am 62 years old and have never felt better!

What do I attribute this to?

Simply the Whole Food Plant Based lifestyle, or WFPB as it is known! (Here’s a small section of pics of the food I have been eating over the past 52 days!)

This is exactly what it says…no meat, no dairy, no fish, no eggs, no animal products and avoiding oil, salt and sugar wherever possible. I no longer have any oils in my home other than what I wear!

Wholefood oil comes from avocado, nuts and other unprocessed sources that I eat and not pour.

Wholefood means unprocessed.

The whole of the food.

So, potatoes are cooked in their skins and I try to incorporate as much as possible of the whole of the food.

The proof of the lifestyle can be seen in my own body every day as I continue to lose the excess weight in a healthy, balanced and kind to Mother Earth way.

I am writing about this in my next book and will share all the knowledge I have gained in the new lifestyle I have embraced…I have NEVER felt this good in my body and mind!

IMG_9281 (2)IMG_9283market (2)And a reminder of my weight problem and ensuing health problems from last year…IMG_7657 (2)Now that I’m here, I’m never going back!

The Woodland Cottage

12

IMG_7964

It is Lughnasadh, the last great festival of the Celtic Calendar!

IMG_7974The year is tipping towards an end as Samhain marks the beginning of the new year… IMG_7971There has been much change here at Bealtaine Cottage as the canopy of trees has merged to form what is now truly a woodland.

IMG_7977This evolution has happened at just the right moment in time as we have witnessed a terrifyingly hot summer and drought…the woodland gardens have come through the worst unscathed…no loss on anything!

IMG_7966Beauty now lies between the stones of the great circle. I have flowers to plant here and many, many happy memories of this visiting soul who decided to spend time with us here at Bealtaine.

IMG_7976And so the wheel turns…

Jack is happy I am home from London and SammyBear sleeps on my bed. I wonder the woodland gardens able to breath once more!

For much of my time away I was very aware of my shallow breathing.

Indeed my face looked older and more stressed.

I am happiest here keeping care of this sacred place.

IMG_7960Much of my holiday was spent walking, something I love about being in the city!

To walk and be able to peer into other’s lives, through windows that are close enough to touch in the winding streets of North London.

I continued on my Whole Food Plant Based Lifestyle while on holiday and was two pounds lighter upon my return home!

There are many more Vegan eateries and it was much easier to eat this way.

IMG_7980IMG_7990Rain had fallen in my absence and the Spring Well was refreshed enough to send water to the cottage down the hill…the tank in the loft is now full and filling!

IMG_7987IMG_7983IMG_7995I expected to see much more leaf drop, but as you can see for yourself here in these photos, the trees have come through unscathed!

IMG_7997The forecast for Autumn seems very much as it should be and may prove to be quite a spectacular colour show!

IMG_7999This website is now approaching two million views…wonderful to imagine all those who have stopped by and perhaps taken a little inspiration into their lives, shaking off the old paradigm of what a garden should be…

IMG_7998The gardens at Bealtaine are all dedicated to the Great Mother and thus are charged with her energy.

IMG_8008IMG_8009IMG_8012IMG_8016The energy of earth is healing, both of herself and all her life upon.

IMG_8039As I walked with Jack around the cottage I was stopped in my tracks by this image…that of a woodland cottage, for this year has seen the manifestation of my heart’s desire from fourteen years ago, that of a cottage in the woods.

One has an idea of scale when seen against the car…

IMG_8025IMG_8019IMG_8018IMG_8028Butterflies were out in force today, in time for the sweet flowers of the Buddleia!

IMG_8022IMG_8030I uploaded a video shot this morning showing some of the Butterflies feasting on the flowers!

IMG_8032I want to say a special “Thanks and Blessings,” to all of you who sent condolences for Beauty…such kindness and compassion, Bless you XXX

IMG_8042IMG_8041IMG_8034IMG_8031There is the beautiful month of Lughnasadh to enjoy and appreciate the changes as summer merges into Autumn.

WFPB Lifestyle Transition:Day 3

5

IMG_7395 (2)

This is Day 3 of my Whole Food Plant-Based, (WFPB) lifestyle.

Why lifestyle?

Well, the diet industry appears to be predicated upon a “lose it and carry on as before” approach to what is becoming the world’s biggest (excuse the pun) threat to health…obesity and its ensuing problems.

download (4)I have completed a 100 Day Juice Fast as a way of restoring health and am now following this lifestyle… It is working very well so far, as I feel content and balanced with all the benefits I felt on the Juice Fast!

I’m wearing a Kath Kidston skirt over short leggings.

This is a comfortable way to wear shorter skirts.

This one has side pockets, so is very practical too.

The belt bag is detachable and made from recycled car tyre inner tubes! I have two recipes to share with you today, one is Hummus and the other is Banana Ice Cream. Both are fat, oil, sugar and salt free!

IMG_7359

2 cloves garlic

1 (15-ounce) can of Chickpeas, drain but reserve the liquid to use in the Hummus.

1 tablespoon Tahini.

Juice of half a fresh lemon.

1 teaspoon ground cumin.

1/4 teaspoon ground coriander.

Process all together, adding about half the reserved liquid.

Ground black pepper to taste and fresh chopped coriander sprinkled on top.

IMG_7358I eat all this in one meal with 2 toasted wholemeal pitta breads with masses of salad including lettuce and chopped herbs.

IMG_7361I am also continuing to juice each day…usually in the morning. This much spinach to 3 green apples and half a lemon.

IMG_7360Watermelon is my preferred snack in this hot weather!

The Banana Ice Cream is simplicity itself and you can dress it up in whatever way suits your taste buds and health.

Take 2 bananas.

Chop into half inch pieces.

Put into a sealed container and freeze.

Once frozen, put the pieces into a food processor with 5 tblsps of plant milk…process for  10-20 seconds until smooth.

Serve immediately or rest in the freezer until ready to serve…no more than 15-20 mins. IMG_7403Yummy and heart healthy!

6492A030-AA9B-4FEA-B82E-4C54A3A452E9I have a further 18lbs to lose in order to reach the OUTER limits of the healthy BMI chart! The wonderful thing is…this does not feel like a diet and really is a lifestyle.

Observed by Consciousness

15

Reality only exists when it is observed…

IMG_6758

These are images I photographed yesterday…what I observed here in the woodland gardens and food forest that is now Bealtaine Cottage.

IMG_6759

Reality can only be observed by consciousness.

IMG_6774

Is this why we are here?

IMG_6773Are we part of the consciousness of Mother Earth?

IMG_6771I believe we shape the beauty around us with both our physical selves and our conscious minds.

IMG_6769We often hear the statement, ‘seeing is believing.’

IMG_6768I say, believing is seeing.

IMG_6766Belief in the sentient being that is Mother Earth has formed a major part of the energy that has manifested here.

IMG_6765IMG_6764IMG_6763IMG_6762

Not so long ago, the reality of this land was a different picture.

There are links at the top of this page where you can see what was…

IMG_6761IMG_6756IMG_6757IMG_6755From the very first time I saw this place I envisioned a cottage in the woods, surrounded by the music of Nature and the beauty of life.

IMG_6753IMG_6754IMG_6752IMG_6751IMG_6750IMG_6749IMG_6748

And here it is.

Blessings X Colette

My 100 Day Juice Fast

40

IMG_5554

This was me last summer.

I weighed over sixteen stones and felt encumbered by all the excess weight I was carrying.

This year, on March 19, at the age of 62, I began a 100 day Juice Fast…for a great many reasons.

Today I am over half way through my 100 day journey, Day 63 to be exact.

I am feeling fantastic.

I am in the process of writing a book all about my journey.

In the meantime, here is a small selection of photos that have formed part of that journey so far.

IMG_6027IMG_6056IMG_6118IMG_6128

So Grateful

8

IMG_6042Mother Earth is thriving.

IMG_6039Her abundance is nothing less than magnificent.

IMG_6037Everywhere on this land She thrives.

IMG_6048I have found a great many Cherry Trees She has seeded and grown over the past two years, but have remained hidden in the general mayhem of Spring and Summer, only to be discovered this year as Spring seemed to struggle and lag behind, so allowing me to see.IMG_6043

It is simply delightful to behold. The mother tree was planted by me a mere 13 yrs ago and already she has brought forth abundance.

IMG_6036

This Field Maple is bearing fruit this year and the Bees are soaring around its topmost branches.

IMG_6083

I know that I have posted this quote before, but it speaks loudly and will not be quietened…IMG_6084

“Wherever forests have not been mowed down, wherever the animal is recessed in their quiet protection, wherever the earth is not bereft of four-footed life – that to the white man is an ‘unbroken wilderness.’ IMG_6080

But for us there was no wilderness, nature was not dangerous but hospitable, not forbidding but friendly. Our faith sought the harmony of man with his surroundings; the other sought the dominance of surroundings.IMG_6079

For us, the world was full of beauty; for the other, it was a place to be endured until he went to another world.IMG_6077

But we were wise. We knew that man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard.”
― Chief Luther Standing Bear

IMG_6076“Kinship with all creatures of the earth, sky, and water was a real and active principle.

IMG_6073In the animal and bird world there existed a brotherly feeling that kept us safe among them…

IMG_6075The animals had rights – the right of man’s protection, the right to live, the right to multiply, the right to freedom, and the right to man’s indebtedness.

IMG_6074This concept of life and its relations filled us with the joy and mystery of living; it gave us reverence for all life; it made a place for all things in the scheme of existence with equal importance to all.”
― Chief Luther Standing Bear

IMG_6072And so wherever we allow Her, enable Her and protect Her, abundance flows…

IMG_6071It’s humbling to witness…

IMG_6070

My Goddess helps me to keep in mind the great Life Force of the Great Mother, for I, as a human need symbols to ground me and remember that She is not just a life-force, but an intelligent sentient being.

IMG_6069Symbols have always resonated with us.

IMG_6067IMG_6066IMG_6064IMG_6063We possess an innate ability to read and understand symbols, for they transcend language and culture.

Yet even as I walk back along the veranda towards the door of the cottage, I see the abundance.

IMG_6086This time in a recently re-potted tree…lots of tiny Parsley seedlings. I have no idea where they have come from, except to add that I used home made compost and these are from the seed-heads of last Summer.

A Feast of Spring

24

IMG_5089

Spring forever appears
the soothing music part
of lyrics unspoken.
It thaws the frozen fears,
mends the wounded heart
that Winter has broken.
~Aarno Davidson

IMG_5088

Tomorrow is the national holiday of Ireland, St Patrick’s Day. As is the norm., the weather is promised cold and a little unpredictable in terms of snow, rain and wind. Here at Bealtaine Cottage the march of Spring continues unabated.

Spring makes its own statement, so loud and clear that the gardener seems to be only one of the instruments, not the composer.

~Geoffrey B. Charlesworth

IMG_5093

As always, the mornings here are filled with promise and, usually, sunshine.

IMG_5092

Ribes sanguineum have exploded into a bright pink fuzzy life, enticing the solitary Bees to awaken from hibernation.

IMG_5095Their heady aroma moves through the trees in a binding spell of delight.

IMG_5094

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

~Charles Dickens, Great Expectations

IMG_5099IMG_5096IMG_5091IMG_5098IMG_5097

Awake, thou wintry earth –
Fling off thy sadness!
Fair vernal flowers, laugh forth
Your ancient gladness!
~Thomas Blackburn, “An Easter Hymn”

IMG_5100IMG_5101IMG_5102

Hazel Catkins add a yellow hue to a backdrop of blue.

IMG_5103IMG_5104IMG_5105

I’ve banished Winter, saith the Spring,
Awake! arise, ye flowers!
Brisk breezes blow,
Bright sunshine glow,
And rouse the young Year’s powers.
~Henry James Slack (1818–1896)

IMG_5106IMG_5107IMG_5108IMG_5109

Despite March’s windy reputation, winter isn’t really blown away; it is washed away. It flows down all the hills, goes swirling down the valleys and spills out to sea. Like so many of this earth’s elements, winter itself is soluble in water…. It is a wet world, winter’s harsh grip beginning to relax…. An outcropping ledge on the hillside sheds its beard of icicles and becomes a seep spring that drips into a shallow pool that feeds a growing runlet.

~”Washing Winter Away,” The New York Times, 1964 March 17th

IMG_5110IMG_5111IMG_5112IMG_5113

Now when the primrose makes a splendid show,
And lilies face the March-winds in full blow,
And humbler growths as moved with one desire
Put on, to welcome spring, their best attire…

~William Wordsworth, “Poor Robin,” March 1840

And so by degrees the winter wore away… and the chill, bitter, windy, early spring came round. The comic almanacs give us dreadful pictures of January and February; but, in truth, the months which should be made to look gloomy in England are March and April. Let no man boast himself that he has got through the perils of winter till at least the seventh of May.

~Anthony Trollope (1815–1882), The Chronicles of Barsetshire

IMG_5120IMG_5121IMG_5122

March brings breezes loud and shrill,
Stirs the dancing daffodil.

~Sara Coleridge (1802–1852)

How To Make A Willow Arch For Your Garden…For Free

13

Go out, go out I beg of you
And taste the beauty of the wild.
Behold the miracle of the earth
With all the wonder of a child.

~Edna Jaques

The miracle of Spring is now very close. Birds are beginning to sing and all over the woodland gardens of Bealtaine Cottage, life stirs.

I am sharing this post with you all today, as Willow can be collected at this time of year and used to great beauty in the garden.

This is How To Make A Willow Arch…

dsc02891

Making a Willow Arch for the Lughnasadh Garden…this is a living arch and will provide food for the Bees.

dsc02907

Take two long lengths of Willow.Any length over 6ft will do! All long Willow is suitable for this project. I used a mix.

dsc02893

Strip off leaves…no need to do this in winter or early spring.

dsc02894dsc02895dsc02896dsc02898

Insert each piece into earth on either side of what will be ab entrance…so, 2-3ft apart will do!

dsc02899dsc02900dsc02901

Push each piece of willow in a minimum of 3 inches.

It will soon root!

Wind the tops together over your head.

This will be the finished height, though it will continue to grow!

Next, add more lengths near to the first two and twist around the willow frame…

dsc02899dsc02900dsc02901

Twisting will tighten and strengthen the arch.

dsc02903

Add more lengths and use each new one to tighten and straighten the arch…pull into shape as you twist.

dsc02904

If you feel you,re not getting the shape you want, lengths can easily be removed and you can start again…don’t be afraid to experiment!

Now add a second arch about 6-10 ins behind the first.

Once in line, insert some more willow by this new arch and pull the lengths forward to the first one…about halfway up the structure as seen here.

dsc02905

Do the same on the first arch, pulling the lengths onto the second, so both criss cross.

dsc02906dsc02907 (1)dsc02907dsc028971

You may add some more Willow…but this is the structure safely in place, where it will continue to grow and thicken.

dsc02907 (1)This will form one of the entrances to the new Lughnasadh Garden.

There is a selection of books written by Colette O’Neill at Bealtaine Cottage, available here…the bookshop supports the entire work of the Bealtaine Project.
