The Greatest Peace Initiative of Our Time

DSC00242This notion that man can, and should, have absolute dominion over the “chaotic” powers of nature and woman…is what ultimately lies behind man’s famous “conquest of nature” – a conquest that is today puncturing holes in the earth’s ozone layer, destroying our forests, polluting our air and water, and increasingly threatening the welfare, and even survival, of thousands of living species, including our own.

I was aware from an early age, through extensive reading and observation, that women have long been associated with Nature.
DSC00173Even the metaphor we use for our planet, ‘Mother Earth’, for instance…our nurturing Earth!
DSC00174
The language we have become over familiar with says it all.. a ‘virgin’ forest is one awaiting exploitation, as yet untouched by man.
DSC00176I have lived through the greatest exploitation and destruction of ‘virgin forests’, ever seen.
DSC00175It is something I would love to be able to wish away and part of the reason I have grown and planted over one thousand trees to co-create Bealtaine Cottage, with, Mother Earth.
DSC00177
Working with the land, in much of the world, is women’s work.
DSC00178Apart from the violence of war and the destruction of the planet, women have been associated with the physical side of life.
DSC00182Even in biblical terms, women are ‘closer to nature’, and so to be kept controlled.
There is a real fear of Nature and all that She imbibes.
DSC00181
Of course, when one takes a long look at how mankind has viewed Nature down through the past several thousand years, it becomes apparent that fear is the driving force.
DSC00185Nature is more powerful than human life.
DSC00186The control over Nature allows a fleeting feeling of control and empowerment…but, never for long, as we all know.
DSC00188So, in my own small way, recognising these truths, I embarked on a journey of making peace…with Her.
DSC00190The ultimate and final Peace Initiative.
DSC00192I come from one of the most devastated towns in Northern Ireland…Omagh.
DSC00193A town that endured such violence and suffering in the worst bombing witnessed on a quiet day in August of 1998.
DSC00198DSC00199DSC00200I mention this as it helps to contextualize my own life and motives for what I do…a complex study in itself!
DSC00202The only end to violence comes when people make peace with each other, or a situation.
DSC00205DSC00206DSC00207Peace and happiness is never birthed from subjugation and control.
DSC00208As a society that has both witnessed and endured these past two world wars, we should be in full receipt of that information!
DSC00213For twelve years now I have striven to make peace with Mother Earth. DSC00215The results are here for all to see.
DSC00216She is not to be feared.
DSC00222DSC00221She is not to be controlled.
(Can you see the little bird in flight from the box?)
DSC00217She is who we live WITH!
DSC00218I learned, to my shock, the other day, that Ireland relied heavily on the importation of Chemical Fertilizer from America during the years of World war Two!
DSC00219That was over sixty years ago, so one must assume that grass has only grown green from chemicals ever since!
DSC00220One must further conclude that alongside this continued abomination has come the loss of topsoil, for one goes hand-in-hand with the other!
DSC00223The ultimate Peace Initiative is working with Mother Earth to create topsoil, as evidenced here.
DSC00224Peace is to be nurtured and worked through.
DSC00237Peace comes with levels of compromise and sacrifice.
DSC00238Peace in our own life comes with persistence and negotiation and keeping the vision with us.
DSC00231Peace comes from the refusal to abuse, the refusal to not live ON Her, but WITH Her!
DSC00236The greatest war of all time is being fought in every garden, allotment, field, woodland, forest, river, ocean and all that makes up Mother Earth.
DSC00226
The future of our children’s children lies within the reflection of our love for Mother Earth today.
We either make peace with Her or forfeit the lives of those whose faces we will never see!

Insanity

There are problems all over the Earth.

I don’t have to make a list…you know what is happening that is causing so much concern.

The problems are all rotating around destruction and involve peoples of all cultures and religions.

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 039

Despite all our differences, there is really only one common denominator we all share…Mother Earth!

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 043

Despite years of belonging to a particular religion, of all the sermons I listened to, the words, “Mother Earth,” were never mentioned by any man.

Surely we need to teach our children love and respect for our home?

Surely this should be at the forefront of all religious teaching?

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 046

The one missing element of understanding is Mother Earth.

The “Financial Markets,” predicated on what is extracted from Mother Earth, care little for the destruction caused in extractive processes.

What is left behind, the degradation and loss, is of no concern.

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 048

The “Markets,” are talked up and down, as though there are multiple Earths!

We know there is only one.

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 050

Sacred is not to be found in Bank Vaults; Parliaments; Stock Exchanges; Temples; Churches…but on where each one of us is today: Mother Earth.

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 059

Each bomb, bar of gold, barrel of oil, tank of gas, is painfully extracted, at great environmental cost…the real price of which is never, ever measured; for to attempt to do so would crash all the economic markets!

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 061

We are living in denial, in a Disneyfied world of our own warped imaginings, where the insane is justified and mainstream!

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 076

At some point we may just realise that…

bealtainecottage.com Permaculture 051

…our greatest common bond is not our humanity, it is what nurtures our humanity…our Mother.

The Protected Badgers of Bealtaine Cottage

Badgers are set to be culled in Britain.

A sad day for this beautiful creature, once more castigated and scorned by man!

Man has blamed Badgers for illness among cattle, despite constant injecting and manipulation of herds by man.

Cattle are seen as an “Agri-industry,” and are often referred to as such.

The real welfare and needs of these animals are often over-looked in the drive for yet more production of milk and flesh…so the Badger suffers the penalty for what is not fully understood!

Kill the Badger is the cry of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Gas them, shoot them, trap them…but kill them!

But, stop!

Have you ever looked into the eyes of a badger?

I have…and I can tell you it is akin to meeting an ancient dweller of this sacred Earth…un-nerving to say the least.

And after the initial shock, a kind of emotional trauma descends, making one want to cry…and I have.

We kill what we fail to understand, or connect with.

And as our own life begins to ebb on this sacred Earth, we are the worse for it…our loss as we wrap ourselves in layers of consumer death.

The Badgers of Bealtaine Cottage will live…but how many will be killed, their sacred journeys through moonlit fields over…our loss.

~ If Governments Can Finance BOMBS, Then Finance This!

Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture

Bombs.

How much money is spent on bombs each year?

Cluster bombs. Hmm…they’re nasty.

Apparently, when it explodes, smaller bombs fly out and scatter exploding and causing mayhem…what an incredible thing for the human mind to invent!

september 2011 bealtaine cottage 012Explosive shock waves can cause situations such as body displacement (i.e., people being thrown through the air), dismemberment, internal bleeding and ruptured eardrums.

Hmm…don’t want to think about that, do you?

Permaculture Cottage ...September 2011 007What a lot of money and imagination to spend on KILLING.

What happens when a bomb is dropped?

Well, a thermal wave is created by the sudden release of heat caused by the explosion.

Permaculture Cottage ...September 2011 008Military bomb tests have documented temperatures of up to 2,480 °C (4,500 °F).,  capable of inflicting severe to catastrophic burns!

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 018Military development of thermobaric weapons,  employ a combination of negative shock wave effects and extreme temperature to incinerate objects within the blast radius.

So lots of incineration…sounds like HELL!

Bealtaine Cottage in September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 001And the millions of people who have NO access to healthcare remain sick and dying… Even in the countries where these bombs are manufactured, millions of people go WITHOUT adequate access to any form of healthcare…now, that IS sick!

We can grow, or we can kill.

September 2011 Permaculture Cottage 020We can mend, or we can destroy.

September Permaculture at bealtainecottage.com 027We can heal, or we can pollute…THE CHOICE IS OURS.

We should not allow the criminally insane Politicians to keep making these choices for us!

50,000 Visitors to Bealtaine Cottage Permaculture Smallholding , West Ireland.

Thanks to all the visitors to Bealtaine Cottage! Through this blog I’ve had the opportunity to meet some great friends and welcome some of those as visitors to Bealtaine in the flesh so to speak! I hope that in the coming weeks and months to welcome many more!

Each year the gardens grow a little more and after seven years there is a sense of maturity at Bealtaine, which is quite noticable. Some trees now reach thirty feet and more and shrubs have more than filled the spaces they were planned for.

All the Mother Plants remain in situ and many of their children have spread out into new areas of the land. There are now fifth and sixth generation plants dotted around the smallholding.

Even the verge on the public road is planted with Bealtaine plants that are all the more hardy for being raised organically here on site. These are planted straight into grass using the no-dig method where only a slit is opened in the ground to receive the rootball, then closed and mulched with grass clippings to keep the plant free from pressure of grass and weeds.

Some of the blackcurrants harvested here yesterday…

Ireland and Sacred Earth. Bealtaine Permaculture at the Cottage

I live in Ireland, but then you know that if you’ve been to Bealtaine before.

I live in a very beautiful part of Ireland…and you are probably aware of that too.

I consider the land sacred.

It is our umbilical cord.

It feeds and nourishes us all.

There is a sacredness in the Earth and many are just awakening to this new consciousness.

I came to Bealtaine nine years ago and my journey here has awakened me.

The greatest work we can do is to protect the sacred Earth…that’s it for me, simple as!

I did not expect what was to happen next…

Big Business coming into my beautiful North West of Ireland to exploit the Gas Reserves that lie beneath this sacred land…and, Bealtaine!

Gas?

94 BILLION DOLLARS worth of it!

And the dreaded technology that is still in its awful infancy…FRACKING!

Banned in France.

No understood outcomes…so new…since 2002, so we wait for the accumulation of information and that may be too late for our sacred Earth…What have we unleashed from Pandora’s Box?

Osama Bin-Laden and the Day that’s in it…The Sun Sets on Permaculture Ireland

The sun sets into the west and the day is nearly over. Rain is promised for the night ahead and tomorrow. All is quiet and calm and dry at Bealtaine. The well has stopped feeding the cottage with its sweet water.

The shadows cast by the setting sun illuminate the curtained cupboard…”I am half-sick of shadows, said the Lady of Shallot…” Listening to the incessant reporting on the death of Osama Bin Laden, I am half-sick of news…! Is this all that is news worthy? Will we ever be told the truth by the popular media? I grew up in Omagh, a town dominated by institutional sectarianism and was aware from an early age that the BBC rarely reported what I experienced…there were two different realities, the one I lived and the one on the screen!

The sun continues its descent into the west.

There is one certainty in all of this mayhem that is civilisation…that the beauty that is Gaia will be here long after we have passed…Perhaps the words of an unknown Irish Bard can best capture the moment that’s in it-      “The world has laid low, and the wind blows away like ashes Alexander, Caesar, and all who were in their trust; grass-grown is Tara, and see Troy now how it is – and the Irish themselves, perhaps they too will pass!”   Irish; author unknown; 17th-18thcentury.
